LAKE BERRYESSA- A KILLER'S TIMELINE [PART TWO]

In the previous article we estimated that the Zodiac Killer arrived at the location of Bryan Hartnell's 1956 White Karmann Ghia at approximately 6.00 pm. Here we shall reverse the timeline of Ronald Fong, the man who noticed the stricken couple from his boat on Lake Berryessa and set off for help at the Rancho Monticello Resort, and hopefully attempt to verify or negate this finding. It may also answer the question of whether the 6:30 written on Bryan Hartnell's vehicle was the time of the attack or the time of writing. Here are some key statements to consider.
#1. On page 6 of the police report it read "White stated at approximately 18.55 hours 9/27/69 he was on routine patrol around the Lake Berryessa area when he received a call from Park Headquarters to proceed to the Rancho Monticello Resort where a person was reporting a possible stabbing. Ronald Fong advised him that he had seen a male and a female victim on the beach area south of Rancho Monticello Resort, hollering that they had been stabbed." link
#2.
Bryan Hartnell interview: "There was a boat kept circling around out there in the lake and we started yelling at it and finally it came within about 100 yards of the shore and turned off its motor and stayed there watching us for about 15 minutes." link
#3.
"I heard this screaming," said Fong, who has relocated to Washington state but was back in San Francisco last week visiting his family. "I used binoculars to see what was going on. He wanted me to go help him. But I had my 9-year-old son. ... I was close to the boathouse, so I went and told the park rangers." link
#4. "Victim stated he thought suspect had been with the couple for approximately 15 minutes from time of observing suspect until suspect departed." link

The Rancho Monticello Resort is 3.7 miles by road from the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, 3.2 miles as the crow flies. By boat from the area of the crime scene to dock at the Rancho Monticello Resort is also approximately 3.7 miles.
We shall use these pieces of information to calculate the time of the attack, first of all using the shortest timeline.
Picture
What we don't know is the speed that Ronald Fong traveled in his boat, so we will estimate this to begin with, at 10.mph.
Sergeant William White received a call from Park Headquarters regarding the attack and proceeded to the Rancho Monticello Resort at 6.55 pm. Because this time is approximated, we will take 6.55 pm as the time Ronald Fong reported the stabbing at the Rancho Monticello Resort, and assume it was transferred through fairly quickly.
The journey time of Ronald Fong at an estimated 10 mph is 22.2 minutes (22 approx). After docking his boat he traveled by foot to the Rancho Monticello Resort, and allocating little time to the delay in transferring the call to Sergeant William White, this is estimated at 6 minutes. So far, a minimum of 28 minutes has elapsed since Ronald Fong departed the crime scene.
Bryan Hartnell stated that after the attack Ronald Fong had "stayed there watching us for about 15 minutes." This time may have appeared longer than it actually was, but it will remain untouched, because Bryan Hartnell certainly wouldn't have started shouting for help immediately with the Zodiac Killer nearby. This delay in calling for help will be incorporated into the 15 minutes. Keeping these timelines as tight as possible will compensate for the speed of Ronald Fong's boat, had it traveled slightly quicker.
Adding the 15 minutes to the 28 minutes already elapsed, we have 43 minutes to deduct from 6.55 pm (18.55 pm), to tell us when the Zodiac Killer finished his attack on the young couple. This would have been 6.12 pm.
Now let us ramp up the speed of the boat to 20 mph. This would cut his journey time in half, to 11 minutes. Giving us a total time elapsed of 32 minutes, placing the end of the attack at 6.23 pm. Traveling at an unlikely 30 mph, the end of the attack would be 6.27 pm. But having kept the timeline as tight as possible, to allow the 10 mph boat speed, the end of the attack was more likely around 6.12-6.17 pm.
On page 6 of the police report it continued "Sergeant William White stated he proceeded to the Rancho Monticello Resort where a person was reporting a stabbing. Ranger Sgt White, accompanied by Archie White, Mrs Elizabeth White and Ronald Fong, proceeded to the beach area via speedboat owned by Archie White. When they arrived on the beach they observed a young female lying on the ground with what appeared to be numerous stab wounds. White stated he immediately radioed in and had Park Headquarters radio the Sheriff's Office to dispatch an ambulance and deputy."
Deputy Ray Land and Sergeant David Collins were dispatched directly to the crime scene from St Helena and Napa respectively. Sgt David Collins spoke on the documentary 'This is the Zodiac Speaking' "It took us a half hour from Napa and/or St Helena to arrive at the location. And we later found out of course that crime had occurred at least half an hour before we were notified." They were notified at approximately 7.10 pm, which by their statement above would place the crime at around 6.10 pm.
Allowing Sergeant William White 8 minutes from being radioed at 6.55 pm to entering the speedboat and 1 minute to reaching Cecelia Shepard once they arrived at the crime scene and contacting Park Headquarters, who in turn contacted the Sheriff's Office, this affords 6 minutes for the speedboat journey. Or 7 minutes if we tighten the timeline. The speedboat was therefore traveling approximately 30-37 mph. This is the reason they took Archie White's speedboat- it likely accommodated four people and could travel at a far greater speed than Ronald Fong's small fishing boat. Indicating that the 10-20 mph range of Ronald Fong's boat, and more likely the lower end estimate, is likely the correct one.

Picture
But what time did the Zodiac Killer approach the couple.
Bryan Hartnell estimated that "he thought suspect had been with the couple for approximately 15 minutes from time of observing suspect until suspect departed." Therefore, if the end of the attack was 6.12 pm, the Zodiac must have approached the couple at 5.57 pm. The distance from the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia to the crime scene was approximately 510 yards. Allowing for the terrain, and the time for the killer to hide behind the tree and don his costume, it would take approximately 7 minutes. This would have the Zodiac Killer spotting the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia at 5.50 pm, slightly earlier than the anticipated 6.00 pm in the previous article. But allowing for a little flexibility in the timeline and taking the end of the attack at 6.17 pm, would have the killer approaching the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia at 5.55 pm, only five minutes out from the previous article. Had the attack finished at 6.12-6.17 pm, then Zodiac would be writing on the car door at 6.19-6.24 pm.
Keeping a tight timeline, with Ronald Fong's boat traveling between 10-20 mph, the end of the attack on the young couple never would have exceeded 6.23 pm. His small boat was extremely unlikely to have reached anything in excess of this range, and indicates the Zodiac Killer more than likely 'signed' the car door by at least 6:30 pm, or possibly slightly earlier.
The last article theorized Zodiac's vehicle just over a mile north of this location. However, if he had parked by the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, the Zodiac Killer could have had anywhere from 70-80 minutes for his 40-50 minute journey to the payphone in Napa, indicating he either went off route on the return journey, he stopped or was delayed somewhere, or his vehicle wasn't parked behind the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia of Bryan Hartnell.
But why did Ronald Fong, if he frequented the area regularly, travel 3.7 miles north to the Rancho Monticello Resort for help, when he could have traveled 0.7 miles south, directly to Park Headquarters.

THE SECOND 'ZODIAC' ON JACKSON STREET

Here we will take one final look at the vital four minutes from the time of the attack on Paul Stine, detailed in the police report as 9.55 pm, and the sighting of an unknown white male by the intersection of Jackson and Maple by Donald Fouke at 9.59 pm.
It is often claimed that trying to break down a timeline to individual seconds can lead to incorrect conclusions, and that is a worthy contention. However, when the discrepancy is so extremely glaring, then it is simply something that should not be overlooked. In major investigations involving many suspects, it is imperative to interview each and break down the movements of the individual around the relevant time period to consider the validity of their claims. Timelines are crucial in identifying unachievable claims, or including and excluding suspects from the investigation.
There is a very real possibility that two individuals were present in the taxicab that night, and the white male subject observed by Officer Donald Fouke approaching the intersection of Jackson and Maple was not the white male subject observed in and around the taxicab on October 11th 1969, but both were present as it pulled up to the corner of Washington and Cherry Street at 9.55 pm.
To shoot a taxicab driver in the wealthy district of Presidio Heights, then carefully tear a rectangular piece of the victim's shirt to take from the crime scene is extremely daring. But to then remove his keys and wallet, wipe down the taxicab, and inexplicably attempt to pull Paul Stine into an upright position behind the steering wheel on a busy Saturday night, with the certain conviction that nobody has heard the gunshot and called police, is bordering on insanity. This whole sequence of events from murdering the taxicab driver to leaving the crime scene, we would have to believe took just 60 seconds.
Picture
It is without doubt the author of the 'Bus Bomb' letter mailed on November 9th 1969 was a participant in the murder one month earlier. The statement in the letter claiming "2 cops pulled a goof about 3 min after I left the cab," is not only proof he knew the exact time of the murder, but had knowledge that two police officers in a vehicle were present near the intersection of Jackson and Maple at the correct time that night. This information was never published in the newspapers.
Officers Donald Fouke and Eric Zelms received the police dispatch of an assault and robbery of a taxicab driver at 9.58 pm. This dispatch was also received at 9.58 pm by Armond Pelissetti and Frank Peda while patrolling along Washington Street.
Pelissetti and Peda arrived at the murder scene a little before 9.59 pm.
The journey time is 1 minute for Donald Fouke and Eric Zelms to reach the intersection of Jackson and Maple from their location on Presidio Avenue, upon receiving the initial radio broadcast, where they spotted the unknown white male, seemingly the one who described the "2 cops who pulled a goof."
This places Donald Fouke at the intersection of Jackson and Maple at 9.59 pm. Armond Pelissetti arrived at the intersection of Washington and Cherry just shy of 9.59 pm. But how do we know Armond Pelissetti arrived at the crime scene nearing 9.59 pm. The answer lies in the expanded statement of the three teenage eyewitnesses that night:
"As both Robbins kids were the oldest, their statements were the given the most weight. Also they were the least traumatized by the event. One of the kids (not sure which) noticed a cab parked outside (in that now famous spot) with the interior lights on. So when Lindsey told me that the light inside the car was like a spotlight, it was so bright.
The first kid at the window said the driver looked "sick, or something". Lindsey and Rebecca went to the window and saw the driver laying across the front seat, head toward the passenger door. His head was in the lap of another man (passenger). Rebecca saw blood and said out loud, "he's stabbing that man." She was seeing blood on the victim and saw the glint of a knife, so she assumed a stabbing was taking place. (No shots were heard by anyone). We know now that Zodiac was cutting off a large piece of Stine's shirt with the knife.
At this time, Lindsey went downstairs to get a better look at what was happening, while one of the kids upstairs called the police. Downstairs, the lights were off, so Lindsey knew he could not be seen from the outside. He got close to the window and watched his actions. He was shortly joined by Rebecca. They both watched and observed in silence as Zodiac pushed the driver to an upright position behind the steering wheel, exited the car and walked around the rear of the car and opened the driver's door. Stine had fallen over onto the seat and Zodiac pulled him back up into the seated position and had some difficulty keeping him upright. Once upright, he was seen to have a rag, or something like a handkerchief and began to wipe down the door area and leaning over the driver, part of the dashboard. When he was finished, Zodiac calmly walked to Cherry St. and walked north.
Not many know this, but Lindsey (being 16. feeling immortal, and believing the suspect to be armed with only a knife) ran out of his door to see where Zodiac was going. He ran to the corner of Cherry and watched as Zodiac continued his casual pace right up to the corner of Jackson & Cherry.

At this exact point, the first SFPD car arrives with two officers. One, Pelissetti, approached Lindsey and tried to extract what was happening. The other officer went to the cab and found the bloody victim. While Pelissetti was asking questions, Lindsey was trying to explain that the suspect was in sight on Cherry St. By the time Pelissetti got the point, they both looked and the Zodiac was gone."

Picture
The key line here is the last one. Lindsey was trying to show Armond Pelissetti the subject nearing the top of Cherry Street before he disappeared along Jackson Street. The journey time from the intersection of Washington and Cherry to the top of Cherry Street is approximately 1 minute. The remaining journey time from here to Jackson and Maple is 2 minutes. The total journey time is about 3 minutes, exactly as 'Zodiac' had claimed in the 'Bus Bomb' letter: "2 cops pulled a goof about 3 min after I left the cab."  Donald Fouke spotted the unknown white male at 9.59 pm, meaning the subject left the taxicab at around 9.56 pm.
The unknown white male taking the journey time of 1 minute up Cherry Street would place him near the top of Cherry Street at 9.57 pm, where Lindsey pointed him out to Armond Pelissetti as he arrived at the scene. This is where a major problem arises. Armond Pelissetti didn't even get the initial broadcast until 9.58 pm, and still had to travel to the scene "red light and siren."
Let us assume Armond Pelissetti was only 20 seconds away from the crime scene when he got the radio dispatch. He brings his police car to a halt at the junction, then approaches Lindsey, and "
while Pelissetti was asking questions, Lindsey was trying to explain that the suspect was in sight on Cherry St." Attributing all of this only 30 seconds, which is highly unlikely, would mean the time after the initial radio dispatch of 9.58 pm, was now 9.58:30 pm, the time he saw the subject at the top of Cherry. But we know that the subject was there at 9.57 pm based on everything above. According to the timeline of Donald Fouke the subject left the taxicab at 9.56 pm, so how could he have been spotted 2 1/2 minutes later at the top of Cherry Street, at 9.58:30 pm. Even using this stringent timeline there is a discrepancy of 90 seconds over the length of Cherry. Another way of looking at it, is that only 30 seconds after the initial radio broadcast the timeline is already out by a minimum of 90 seconds. If Armond Pelissetti took a more reasonable 1 minute to arrive, park up and meet with Lindsey, the time would be one minute after the broadcast, a time of 9.59 pm, when he was made aware of the subject nearing the top of Cherry. This however, is the same time that Donald Fouke spotted the subject nearing the intersection of Jackson and Maple. A discrepancy of two whole minutes.
This discrepancy over 10, 20, 30, or 60 minutes could possibly be explained away, but this discrepancy of two minutes, only one minute after the initial radio broadcast, is something that cannot be explained away by an argument of nitpicking the timeline.
In the 2007 Zodiac documentary Armond Pelissetti stated he "got down to the corner of Jackson Street. Had to make a choice. I was on the east side of the street so I turned right to the east and went up in that direction." The question is, did he make that choice because of Lindsey pointing the subject out to him, a more realistic reason to why he headed east.

Therefore we have the white male subject at the top of Cherry Street at 9.59 pm, and at the intersection of Jackson and Maple at 9.59 pm, which clearly is not possible, unless they are two different people. Lindsey had tracked the movements of the subject in and around the taxicab that night, as well as when he rounded the corner to head up Cherry Street, so we know this person was involved in the crime. Could he have entered Jackson Street and was able to see the red light and siren of Donald Fouke at the other end of Jackson Street pulling over an innocent pedestrian. Then referencing this in his 'Bus Bomb' letter a month later, to give the impression that it was actually him Donald Fouke had spoken to. This is highly unlikely, because this person, had he been an innocent pedestrian, would not have directed Donald Fouke away from the crime scene toward Arguello Boulevard, as Donald Fouke stated in the 1989 'Crimes of the Century' documentary
"We proceeded on Jackson Street towards Arguello continuing our search, as we arrived at Arguello Street the description of the suspect was changed to a white male adult, believing this suspect was possibly the one involved in the shooting we entered the Presidio of San Francisco and conducted a search on West Pacific Avenue, the opposite side of the wall and the last direction we observed the suspect going, we did not find the suspect."
Why would Donald Fouke be heading away from an assault and robbery to which he was supposed to be responding towards.
The likely answer is contained in the 'Bus Bomb' letter: "
2 cops pulled a goof abot 3 min after I left the cab. I was walking down the hill to the park when this cop car pulled up + one of them called me over + asked if I saw anyone acting suspicious or strange in the last 5 to 10 min + I said yes there was this man who was runnig by waveing a gun & the cops peeled rubber."  The white male subject sent them on a wild goose chase, knowing that, presented with the option of the police further questioning him, or burning rubber to protect the public from a man waving a gun, the police would choose to quell the imminent threat. Which is why Donald Fouke went off route, away from the crime scene towards Arguello Boulevard. They likely made the correct call at the time, as they were on the lookout for a male negro adult. Unfortunately they were duped by the man they stopped. Therefore it is highly unlikely this man was an innocent pedestrian, rather somebody with a more sinister motive, and likely the man who penned the November 9th 1969 'Bus Bomb' letter. We effectively have more than one Zodiac.
Picture
These are the three descriptions of the unknown male, given by Officer Donald Fouke, the three teenagers, and eyewitnesses at Spruce Street moments after the 'meeting' at Jackson and Maple.
Spruce Street was situated just over one block east and was indirectly referenced in the 'Bus Bomb' letter: "I said yes there was this man who was runnig by waveing a gun & the cops peeled rubber + went around the corner as I directed them + I disappeared into the park a block + a half away never to be seen again."
Donald Fouke's description of the likely Zodiac Killer was "WMA, 35-45 yrs, about 5'10", 180-200 lbs, medium heavy build, barrel chested, medium complexion, light colored hair possibly graying in rear, crew cut, wearing glasses. Dressed in dark blue waist length zipper type jacket (Navy or royal blue). Elastic cuffs and waist band zipped part way up. Brown wool pants pleated type baggy in rear (Rust brown). "
Here is the description given by the teenagers, who observed the Zodiac Killer in and around the taxicab on Washington Street from a residence across the street: "A white male, 25-30 years old, 5'8" to 5'9", stocky build, reddish-brown hair worn in a crew cut, heavy rimmed glasses and dark clothing."
The October 12th 1969 San Francisco article detailed the sighting of a man entering Julius Khan playground: "Later reports indicated someone was seen running into Julius Khan playground in the Presidio, and all seven police dog units were pressed into the search. The suspect was described as white, about 40, 170 pounds, a blond crewcut, warning glasses."
One thing to notice in the latter two sightings, is the man appeared to have aged considerably and his hair had changed color. This doesn't mean it was a different person, but opens up the possibility that it may have been two separate individuals, both of whom were present in the taxicab as it approached the intersection of Washington and Cherry. Although the descriptions varied slightly, they must have been somewhat similar, as Donald Fouke did not contradict the sketch created by the three teenagers,  only describing the man as "older and heavier". Were the perpetrators related by blood, or had they employed disguises, something that was mentioned by the author of the November 9th 1969 'Bus Bomb' letter.
The first assailant shot the taxicab driver at 9.56 pm and departed the crime scene immediately. He was spotted by Officer Donald Fouke three minutes later at the intersection of Jackson and Maple at 9.59 pm, corroborated by the 'Bus Bomb' letter: "2 cops pulled a goof about 3 min after I left the cab." The second assailant was the one spotted by the three teenagers, indicating they looked out of the window after the first assailant had left. This man spent two minutes wiping down the taxicab, tearing the section of Paul Stine's shirt, removing the keys and wallet, and attempting to lift Paul Stine into an upright position behind the steering wheel, before leaving at 9.58 pm. Armond Pelissetti receives the initial radio broadcast at 9.58 pm and arrives en scene just shy of 9.59 pm, at which point the second assailant is approaching the top of Cherry Street, and is pointed out by Lindsey. This totally explains the discrepancy in the timeline.

Picture
This may possibly explain the evident lack of urgency displayed by the second assailant in and around the taxicab that night. Had the police arrived earlier, his actions could have been explained as an innocent passer-by, who noticing the stricken taxicab driver had ripped a portion of shirt to staunch the blood flow. He wasn't in possession of the 'smoking gun', so how could he be the killer. When he realized the police were not upon him, his last action was to grab the keys from the ignition, and head in the same direction as his accomplice. If he was attempting to lift Paul Stine into an upright position, this would certainly explain why bloodied fingerprints were discovered on the dividing panel to the right of the driver side door, which clearly he would have used to brace himself. But why he was doing it, one can only conjecture.
Lindsey was fairly clear in the details observed that night, particularly in the attempt to draw Armond Pelissetti's attention to the white male heading up Cherry Street. If this recollection is accurate, then the man observed walking towards Jackson Street was not the same subject spotted by Donald Fouke as he approached the intersection of Jackson and Maple. These two men were separated by two full minutes. If the account by Lindsey is flawed, then the idea of an accomplice dissolves away into the night, just like the lone Zodiac Killer.

THE RIVERSIDE PROPHECY [PART TWO]

Just a quick recap of the article 'The Riverside Prophecy.'
The Zodiac Killer finished many of his communications with the running victim total. The Dripping Pen card gave us the time, in the form of a month, and the total. The Bus Bomb letter stated "up to the end of Oct I have killed 7 people."
The July 31st 1969 San Francisco Chronicle letter warned us of future murders "If you do not print this cipher by the afternoon of Fry.1st of Aug 69, I will go on a kill ram-Page Fry. night." The Halloween card is also believed by many to be a future threat towards Paul Avery.
What if we apply the same model to the Riverside Desktop Poem, where he signs off the poem with "Just wait till next time. rh." The Riverside Desktop Poem was discovered in the December of 1966. But it might very well have been written prior to the murder of Cheri Jo Bates on October 30th 1966, and the warning of "Just wait till next time. rh." was referring to the time and place of his next murder. Remember, the author of the Confession letter had suggested he was trying to lure Cheri Jo Bates into his vehicle. This may possibly indicate he had planned to murder Cheri Jo Bates later than the believed 10.30 pm, when screams emanated from the alleyway, likely on Halloween Day itself, but something clearly had resulted in the unplanned struggle in the alleyway and her 'premature' murder from the perspective of the killer. Had he achieved his objective in luring the young woman into his vehicle, the likely prediction of the Riverside Desktop Poem would have come true. "Just wait till next time. riverside, halloween."

PictureClick to enlarge
The 'Confession' letter ended with a threat: "Beware I am stalking your girls now." The Riverside Desktop Poem equally ended with a threat: possibly "Just wait till next time. riverside, halloween."  If it was the time and place of the next murder, what is the chance that the Bates letters mailed to Joseph Bates,  the Riverside Press Enterprise and the Riverside Police were also threatening a date and place of a further murder, but not necessarily one that came to fruition.
Many have speculated the author of the Bates letters signed off two of the communications with the letter Z. However, they have a misshapen upper portion, leading to the idea they could again be two letters, in similar vein to the Riverside Desktop Poem. Despite being joined, the nearest they resemble is the letter M followed by an L.
Bearing in mind the Riverside Desktop Poem may have been written in the early part of October, before the murder of Cheri Jo Bates, it was thought that the letter H possibly represented Halloween, thereby presenting an imminent threat.
The Bates letters were mailed on April 30th 1967. An imminent threat in this case, bearing in mind April was drawing to a close, would have been the month of May. This would provide the time or date, but what about the location.
Many killers will employ a 'buffer zone' to their residence, or a distance they can afford to travel without raising suspicion. Using the most basic form of geographical profiling, we shall look for a home location equidistant from the crime scene of the Cheri Jo Bates murder on Terracina Drive, and an area targeted in the month of May with the letter L.

PictureCheri Josephine Bates
One thing to consider first, is the evidence discovered in the alleyway close to Cheri Jo Bates' body.
The Department of Justice report described the heel prints at the Cheri Jo Bates crime scene as "those worn by Air Force personnel" and "was identified as a B.F. Goodrich waffle design, men's four-eighths inch washer type half heel. The B.F Goodrich Products Division of Akron, Ohio, reported that this type heel is only sold to the Federal prison industries at Leavenworth, Kansas. It was subsequently learned that Federal prison industries made low quarter military type shoes and supplied them to all the armed services using black dress shoes. The measurement of the heel indicated that it would have been attached to an eight to ten size shoe. Shoes bearing the same type heel were issued and sold at the PX at March Air Force Base in Riverside." In fact the Riverside Police Department would sum this up by stating "Physical evidence found at our crime scene indicated that heel prints found by the body were made by a heel that was manufactured for military and other government agencies, including prisons."
So let us look at March Air Force Base. This base is
14 miles from Terracina Drive, and is located 12 miles from Lakeview, almost equidistant between the two. Did our suspect reside at the March Air Force Base, and was setting his 'buffer zone' around this location. Lakeview is bordered by the Upland Game Hunting Area.
Leading to the the slim chance the threat on the Bates letters may possibly be "BATES HAD TO DIE THERE WILL BE MORE. MAY LAKEVIEW".
This is highly unlikely, because the author would then have joined two letters, something he didn't feel the need to do on the Riverside Desktop Poem, so if anybody can suggest another possible answer, please do not hesitate in offering your ideas in the comments section below.

THE RIVERSIDE PROPHECY [PART ONE]

IN THE SHADOWS OF THE COLLEGE

In the aftermath of the Cheri Jo Bates murder in Riverside on October 30th 1966 a library reconstruction was performed on November 13th 1966, with fingerprints and hair samples taken from the attendees to compare to crime scene evidence. How many college students and personnel were ultimately screened can only be speculated, but it was likely extensive. But who on the fringes of Riverside City College slipped through the net. Riverside College was undergoing extensive renovation at the time and was likely a hub of activity, that included contractors employed for this very task. Who could travel unhindered around the college campus, with access to buildings usually considered off limits. The murder was committed at the end of October, with the Bates letters mailed on April 30th 1967. We are looking at a period of 6 months, before the Zodiac Killer disappeared and apparently resurfaced in Benicia just over one and a half years later. If the Zodiac Killer was responsible for the events in Riverside, then it is conceivable, that if he worked around or within the Riverside City College campus, he took his profession with him when he resumed his murderous activities in northern California.
The focus of our killer seemed to centralize around the Riverside College campus. We shall therefore look at some key bullet points.
PictureIn the side corridor of the library annex. Conditions were so congested at the RCC Library (then located in the Quadrangle’s room 144) that the adjoining northern corridor of the Quad was enclosed and turned into a study room to somewhat alleviate overcrowding. This area remained enclosed until the 1980s when it was returned to its original look. Not believed to be Cheri Jo Bates.in the photograph. Click the image for enhanced look at the woman in the photograph.
#1. Cheri Jo Bates arrived at the campus shortly after 6.00 pm,  but screams were heard from the alleyway circa 10.30 pm. What  happened during this time period is unknown, but the killer  specifically targeted Cheri Jo Bates Volkswagen Beetle and may have remained on site for upwards of four hours.
Does this suggest he was comfortable in these surroundings and could travel around the campus largely unnoticed. Did the killer have access to a building in the vicinity of the library annex. Was he able to approach Cheri Jo Bates, only because he was familiar to her, yet he wasn't a close friend or fellow student.
#2. The two buildings either side of the crime scene were unoccupied. Would a killer lure a woman into this particular alleyway and commit a brutal attack, lasting possibly a minute or more, if he thought that these dwellings were inhabited by potential eyewitnesses, or even park his vehicle nearby.
This goes to the very heart of whether this perpetrator knew the status of these two buildings and the area he was operating in. Knowing in advance that nobody was overlooking the crime scene was seemingly fundamental to his escape from justice.
#3. A Timex watch was ripped from the murderer's wrist during the struggle. It carried white flecks of paint. Did this belong to a worker, somebody who was involved in the renovation of the campus facilities.
#4. Here is a little background on the Riverside City College library: "The library is located on the Terracina Avenue side of the Quadrangle. Its collection included more than 35,000 books, 400 current periodicals and newspapers, 1,950 reels of microfilm and 2,000 pamphlets. Its indoor and outdoor facilities could accommodate 225 students. The library staff, included five professional librarians, who offered students and faculty individual assistance.
The services of the College Library were available to students and residents of the area without charge. Students had free access to any of the books and magazines in the collection and were encouraged to use the library for their recreational reading as well as for academic pursuits. The circulation period was flexible and was determined by the demand for the material in question. Usual loans were for three weeks, but shorter periods may have been required for assigned reading in limited materials. Longer loans could be made upon request. Borrowers were held responsible for any library materials which were lost or damaged while in their care. Hours of service were: Monday through Thursday 7:45 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.; Friday 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Sunday 1:00 - 5:00; 6:00 - 9:00 p.m."

Did the killer have access to the library facilities outside of hours.
Somewhere he could write unhindered on the library desktop, without fear that his unsavory poem could link him back to any murderous deeds he may commit. If the Riverside Desktop Poem was a precursor to the murder of Cheri Jo Bates, then an absence of onlookers would be preferential.
#5. The murderer of Cheri Jo Bates may equally have used other facilities from the library. The 'Confession' letters mailed by the killer on November 29th 1966 were several generation copies.
"A photocopying machine, where students could secure 8 1/2 X 11 inch black and white copy of printed or typed material, was available at the library for ten cents."
Photocopying an admission of murder in public may have been perilous, unless you could access such a machine in relative obscurity, such as a library during closing times.
#6. The photocopying machine would have been acquired by the college library in respect to the paper likely used by the college, staff and students alike. The three Bates letters mailed on April 30th 1967 measured 8 1/2 X 11 inches, identical to the size offered by the photocopier in the library.

Picture
#7"An unrelenting search had been in progress for the murder weapon, and that Tuesday detectives used a metal detector in shrubbery adjacent to the murder scene in an effort to find the knife used by the slayer. Captain Cross revealed to the news media that the autopsy showed that the murder weapon was probably a pocket knife with a 3 inch blade or less. The broadcast and published information about the knife caused the police switchboard to be flooded with calls reporting knives of similar description being found all over the city of Riverside."
On November 14th 1966, one day after the highly publicized library reconstruction, the police did get a call from a Riverside City College gardener: "That he had unearthed a hunting knife with his rake. The knife had apparently been buried near the murder scene. Detectives hurried to the campus and turned over the knife to the homicide detail. However, examination failed to show any evidence of dried blood on the knife blade. Also, its width did not compare with the incisions made by the stab wounds."
Did the killer plant this knife to play games with the police, possibly observing them from the campus grounds as a casual onlooker. Was the murderer familiar with the routine of the college gardener, knowing he would eventually unearth the knife, or did he make a call to police, something that was withheld from the newspapers.
#8. The 'Confession' letter stated "She was young and beautiful but now she is battered and dead. She is not the first and she will not be the last. I lay awake at night thinking about my next victim. May'be she will be the beautiful blond that babysits near the little store and walks down the dark alley each evening about seven. Or may'be she will be the shapely brownette that said no when I asked her for a date in high school. But may'be it will not be either."
Was the killer referring to the alleyway where Cheri Jo Bates was murdered. Could he have been present on the Riverside College campus throughout this period, perfectly visible, yet at the same time inconspicuous because of his connection to the college.
What, if anything, was significant about the month delay in claiming the crime in the 'Confession' letter. Was this indicative of how close he was to the college, or was the author a hoaxer, simply reading the newspaper reports and leading us on a merry Danse Macabre.

THE FOURTH PIECE OF PAUL STINE'S SHIRT?

In 2007, the David Fincher 'Zodiac' film burst onto our cinema screens to bring a new audience to the now 49 year old murder mystery. The film was based on the 1986 Robert Graysmith book, but employed many previous investigators as consultants or technical advisors to the film, such as George Bawart, Russell T Butterbach, Pierre Bidou, Kelly Carroll, Donald Fouke, Armond Pelissetti, Ken Narlow and Dave Toschi, to name but a few.
The film does provide a good overview of the Zodiac case, although clearly employs a fair degree of artistic license not based in fact. However there is one key scene that we shall focus on here- the scene where the 'Halloween' card arrives at the San Francisco Chronicle headquarters and a piece of Paul Stine's shirt is discovered in the greetings card.
The Zodiac Killer mailed three pieces of Paul Stine's shirt, firstly in the October 13th 1969 letter, secondly in the November 9th 1969 'Bus Bomb' letter and thirdly to Melvin Belli on December 20th 1969, but no mention was ever given to a fourth swatch of Paul Stine's being received with any subsequent correspondence. The film had been accurate in this respect, so why was it necessary to invent this portion of the story when the 'Halloween' card stood on its own merits as a Zodiac correspondence, being perceived as a personal threat to newspaper reporter Paul Avery. With many previous and current investigators involved in the film, this seemed an unnecessary addition of fiction. Unless of course it wasn't.
The Zodiac did not mail the entirety of the shirt section he removed from the taxicab driver on October 11th 1969, and we have come to believe he wasn't a collector of souvenirs. So why didn't he just mail back the remainder of the shirt in later communications, particularly ones he must have realized would be questioned as authentic correspondence from the killer.
PictureImage from the 2007 David Fincher Zodiac movie
This is not claiming a piece of shirt did arrive with the 'Halloween' card, but is looking for reasons why it could be a possibility based on the card's contents.
There would seem little reason to withhold this from the newspapers when previous pieces received had been fully disclosed. Despite this, in 1970, certain details contained in several correspondences were withheld from publication, most notably the whole of the 'Little List' letter mailed on July 26th 1970, eventually released to the press on October 12th 1970, only two weeks prior to the arrival of the 'Halloween' card. Whether the investigators were trying to force a mistake from Zodiac by 'interfering' with his communications can only be surmised.
The immediate communication after the disappearance of Donna Lass on September 6th 1970 was the Zodiac '13 Hole' postcard containing a pasted red crucifix. In later years a potential burial site was explored by Officer Harvey Hines near Clair Tappaan Lodge, where a rock configuration of 13 stones were positioned in the form of a cross. It was considered that Zodiac may have been pointing us toward the burial site of Donna Lass. The area he had concealed her remains.
Was the 'Halloween' card also pointing us toward an area of concealment in a rather more subtle way. The author of the 'Halloween' card had certainly made great effort in creating additions to this card, in similar fashion to the '13 Hole' postcard, but obviously in a more magnified fashion. What purpose belied the addition of a pumpkin over the pelvis of the first skeleton, as well as adding the second skeleton on the card inner. If indeed this held great purpose, then it was largely missed by most observers. One would like to believe the pumpkin and skeleton were placed on the card for more than just the casual amusement of its creator. That is what we shall investigate.

PictureClick image to view card inner
The first thing to look at is "peek-a-boo you are doomed," a perceived threat to newspaper reporter Paul Avery, placed around the knothole of the tree on the card inner.
Peek-a-boo is a form of play, where a parent for example, may cover their face with their hands, and then reveal themselves to the infant, exclaiming peekaboo. Was this Zodiac patronizing his investigators, painting himself as the parent while subtly mocking the police and journalists as children, warning them they were "doomed." In addition, was it suggestive of something hidden that was about to be revealed. The eye in the knothole telling us to look closer.
The Zodiac Killer could have drawn on the 'Halloween' card, but chose to add a cut out pumpkin and skeleton. The inside of the envelope contained the phrase "sorry no cipher" twice, formed into an X formation. There may have been no cipher, but was the X marking a location to be found.
The pumpkin on the card outer was fashioned over the pelvic region of the skeleton, only to be effectively removed from the skeleton on the card inner, to the delight of the author in the form of the word "Boo." Again, an extension of something concealed to the observer, before its unearthing. Everything in the card screams out to something hidden that will be revealed. If the Zodiac Killer didn't place a small piece of Paul Stine's shirt behind the pumpkin, it could be argued he missed a Halloween trick, or treat in his case. He drew a styled red mask on the eyes of the inner skeleton, that likely in the real world would be made of fabric, that once again hints at concealment.
It has also been noted by many observers that the inner skeleton is somewhat posed in the fashion of Paul Stine lying prostrate in the taxicab- the mask on the skeleton's eyes depicting the strategically placed black rectangle over the face of Paul Stine, in respect of dignity and sensitivity. But was a small swatch of shirt, similar in size to the mask, concealed under the pumpkin.

Picture
The Zodiac Killer may have written 14 on the 'Halloween' card three times. Firstly, the number fourteen on the hand of the outer skeleton. Secondly, in the form of 4-TEEN above the head of the inner skeleton. And thirdly, in the form of a strange symbol at the foot of the card inner, which may represent 'Zodiac Victims Fourteen' or 'Zodiac Fourteen.'  There may however be another possibility, based on the 'four eyes' near the pelvic region of the skeleton, and near the strange symbol at the foot of the card, where the Zodiac Killer curiously added four dots.
The Bay Area killer certainly was indicating 14 victims, or a potential 14 victims, however he also appeared to be emphasizing the number 4.
He deliberately separated the number fourteen to create 4-TEEN.
He placed four larger eyes close to the pelvic region of the skeleton, as if urging us to see something, along with the four dots around the symbol.
Could the symbol stand for 'Zodiac Four,' or was it still 'Zodiac Victims Fourteen,' with four attachments to date- The fourth piece of Paul Stine's shirt concealed under the pumpkin by the pelvic region of the outer skeleton, highlighted by the four large eyes imploring us to discover.
The Zodiac Killer mailed the 'Halloween' card just after the first anniversary of the Presidio Heights murder, so if he was to send any more pieces of Paul Stine's shirt, this may have been his opportune moment. But we are led to believe he didn't, and nothing presented above can fully convince otherwise.

MIDNIGHT COWBOY

The 'Exorcist' letter was mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle on January 29th 1974 - to some a form of epitaph to his impending death by suicide. The final paragraph however warned "If I do not see this note in your paper, I will do something nasty, which you know I'm capable of doing," seemingly contradictory to this notion. The letter opened in mocking fashion, describing the recently released Exorcist film as "the best saterical comidy that I have ever seen."
Was he constructively criticizing the film, or had its content of exorcism hit closer to home from the point of homosexuality.
On October 18th 1969 Paul Avery ran a piece in the San Francisco Chronicle describing the Zodiac Killer as a 'latent homosexual'. Under the banner Zodiac-Portrait of the Killer  he stated "The killer of five who calls himself 'Zodiac' is a clumsy criminal, a liar and possibly a latent homosexual." This was covered extensively in two articles, Skeleton in the Closet and What a Drag, and we shall explore this possibility further in respect the October 11th 1969 murder of Paul Stine.
This was the late 1960s, a time when the gay community suffered unspeakable prejudice from the police, authorities and a seeping religious intolerance. Christian fundamentalists, cloaked in toxic reverence of themselves, believed incorrectly, by summoning the will of God upon the person with homosexual feelings, that the devil could be driven out of their body and thus cleanse their soul. It therefore wouldn't be a great leap of faith to believe that the Zodiac Killer had utter contempt for this form of religious piety and the practice of exorcism, hence the description of The Exorcist movie as the "the best saterical comidy that I have ever seen." This contempt for the police and newspapers may have been well founded, as arrested gay individuals had their names and addresses routinely published in the newspapers as a form of public shaming.
PictureWestin St. Francis Hotel, 335 Powell Street, San Francisco
The Zodiac Killer would reference the film Badlands on May 8th 1974 and the Red Phantom movie, also known as El Espectro Rojo on July 8th 1974, which had a showing at the Lyric Theater in Mill Valley at the end of April. The Zodiac Killer certainly appeared to have a penchant for the theatrical, with his references to The Mikado in his correspondence, and his 'grand curtain call' at Lake Berryessa on September 27th 1969. However, did this extravagance for attention spill out into his personal life.
Did these 'attractions' for Zodiac have any bearing on his movements in the hours prior the murder of Paul Stine.
Taking meter readings from the taxicab at the crime scene and information acquired by Robert Graysmith and Officer Harvey Hines, it was believed the Zodiac entered the taxicab of Paul Stine outside the Westin St Francis Hotel in Union Square. But where had he been in the hours preceding this fateful journey.
The 'Exorcist' letter was without doubt a response to the San Francisco Chronicle article entitled 'Weird Goings on at the Movies,' authored by Paul Avery and published on January 11th 1974, detailing the audience reaction to the recently released Exorcist movie in 1973. The news report was from the Northpoint Theatre, located at 2290 Powell Street, San Francisco. The theater was located 3.4 miles from Washington and Cherry Streets, the intersection where Paul Stine was murdered and only 1.3 miles from Union Square, where the taxicab driver picked up Zodiac.
The Exorcist movie opened its 26 week stint at the Northpoint Theatre on December 26th 1973 and had performances throughout the day. A typical schedule was 1.00 pm, 4.00 pm, 7.00 pm and 10.00 pm, for films two hours or longer.
The area where Paul Stine picked up the Zodiac Killer was the bustling theater district in San Francisco, so his perceived  leanings to the theatrical in his communications may have played a part in his choice of pick-up point. Had he just exited from an early evening performance? The arrival of the taxicab at the intersection of Washington and Cherry at 9.55 pm indicated a departure time of approximately 9.40 pm from Union Square, conducive to his exit from a nearby theater. The Westin St Francis Hotel may also have been familiar. Union Square borders the Nob Hill and Tenderloin districts, which combines both the LGBT and theater influences under one banner. Jose Sarria, a high profile San Francisco drag performer and gay activist  was arrested at the Westin St Francis public restrooms for solicitation, a location known to be frequented by homosexuals.

Picture
Had the Zodiac Killer been somewhere else that evening, rather than a stage performance. Could he have been viewing a movie at the Northpoint Theatre. A two hour film beginning at 7.00 pm and finishing at 9.00 pm, would leave a 25-30 minute walk back to Union Square, possibly with a quick takeaway, to enable the Zodiac Killer to enter Paul Stine's taxicab circa 9.40 pm. But what was playing at the Northpoint Theatre on October 11th 1969.
Midnight Cowboy ran from the 16th July 1969 to 17th December 1969.
The film, starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight won three Academy AwardsBest PictureBest Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was the first gay-related Best Picture winner. In addition, it was the only X-rated film ever to win Best Picture.
Ironically, the film that preceded Midnight Cowboy was The Great Bank Robbery with writer William Blatty accredited for screenplay.
Here is a very relevant clip from Midnight Cowboy, where Dustin Hoffman has an altercation with a Yellow taxicab driver. The taxicab incident in Midnight Cowboy was apparently not scripted in the film- but likely Zodiac's impending murder of Paul Stine was conceived beforehand, a predetermined reel of murder for which there was only one end.

THE ZODIAC KILLER'S STANFORD CONNECTION

"The following article was sent to me by Ray Jenkins, an amateur sleuth from Australia, regarding a connection between Zodiac and Stanford, Santa Clara County, California. It is an extremely interesting read, and remains unaltered. At the foot of this presentation I have placed a link to a Zodiac Ciphers article, relevant to this subject."

The Zodiac killer’s apparent interest in The Mikado has long puzzled many researchers and detectives. Recently I came across several articles in the Stanford Daily newspaper from the Zodiac era, which began to intrigue me and so I decided to dig a little deeper. A picture started to emerge and I believe I may be able to offer some plausible reasons for the Zodiac’s sojourns into Gilbert and Sullivan opera and his apparent interest in compass directions. In order to get my head around the articles, I decided to write up a chronological timeline of events, cross-referenced with some of the Zodiac’s timeline (following).

Zodiac's "Stanford" timeline:
July 31st 1969: The Zodiac first introduces the concept of "Paradice" in his letters.

August 4th 1969: The killer uses the name “Zodiac” for the first time.

October 24th 1969: The Stanford Daily publishes an article written by Craig Wilson which lampoons the San Francisco Examiner's recent letter to the Zodiac. Basically intended as playful satire, the author went so far as to deride the Zodiac and invites him to their next staff meeting. It read;
'Let there be no more killing. But if you must, try Paul McCartney. Police say you are intelligent. If you are, give yourself up and face execution. You are being hunted everywhere in he state and nation. But don't get jumpy. You are alone in this world. Have you noticed that most of your friends have deserted you? You are as much a victim of your crimes as those whose lives you snuffed out. Of course you do seem to be in better condition. You cannot walk the streets a free man. Of course, we have no idea who you are. But you will be caught, there is no doubt. The police have staked out every school bus in town and Melvin Belli has been made a permanent guest on every talk show in the Bay Area. You face life as a hunted, tormented animal—unless you help yourself. Surrender. We have plenty of cages available. We ask that you give yourself up to The Daily. We offer you no protection, and no sympathy. But we do offer you the best medical help available and all the benefits your legal rights afford. We offer you the opportunity to transfer into our fine institution. We offer you a trailer in Manzanita Park. We offer you a ticket to see Stanford in the Rose Bowl. We offer you all the plastic cups we can produce with your signature and photograph. The food service has consented to feed you chocolate ice cream even if it isn't available. We offer you a plastic dolly. We offer you a seat in the balcony at the flicks. We offer you credit in Professor Erlich's Population Biology course. And best of all we offer to tell YOUR STORY! Why have you killed? We will give you everything. Your horoscope for today says your anger at society is unwarranted, that you will soon come into great fortune. We offer you a subscription to Fortune magazine. We invite you to our staff meeting on Monday at noon. Lunch is free. If you have other things to do, call the Daily anytime. Ask for anyone. We are a community newspaper. The telephone number is 321-2300 x 4632. Call collect, what the hell. Your call will not be traced. We cordially invite our neighborly newspaper The Palo Alto Times to give you a better deal. Just cut your hair and mumble "kk l hate radicals." Chances are they will make a more promising overture. Just remember Mr. Zodiac, you are being hunted everywhere in he state and nation. There is no safety for you, anywhere.' http://stanforddailyarchive.com/

October 31st 1969. Dr John I. Maurer publishes a letter that is very critical of Craig Wilson’s satirical article. It is interesting that Dr Maurer chastises the letter writer, rather than directly warn about the obvious dangers of riling the Zodiac! Dr Maurer calls the letter "stupid", "tasteless" and "inappropriate", and "distressing" because of its "callous insensitivity" towards people with mental health problems. Perhaps the good doctor was merely trying to appease the Zodiac in the event that the killer actually did read the comments? I believe the man in the following link is the Dr John Maurer from that time, but I could be wrong. See: http://health.usnews.com/doctors/john-maurer and Stanford Daily Archive October 31st 1969

October 31st 1969: In the same issue of the Stanford Daily, appear two reviews on page 4, one about the recent Lamplighter performance of The Mikado, the other about Douglas Leedy's recently released album called ELECTRIC ZODIAC. The obvious coincidence with the name immediately caught my attention. I am sure if the Zodiac – egotist that he was - had been following these newspapers in case more articles were written about him, he too would have noticed the coincidence. Leedy was an early synthesizer pioneer and his album basically consists of various, repetitious, electronic blips, squeaks, and squawks which I can only guess may have seemed very experimental and “cool” at the time. Perhaps only the LSD-affected mind could fully appreciate his music’s experimental quality and simplicity? But for those of us today who grew up in the Commodore-64 era or later, the albums do seem rather lacklustre.

Picture
A second interesting coincidence comes with the title of Douglas Leedy’s first album, a 3LP set called Entropical Paradise. Again, this title sets off some alarm bells for those who have researched the Zodiac case in any depth. In his letters the Zodiac killer often claimed to be killing people in order to collect slaves for his own future Paradise (which he spelt “Paradice”, perhaps as a result of poor spelling, or for another more plausible reason that I will raise later in this article). Whether Douglas Leedy’s albums influenced the Zodiac’s choice of name, or whether the Zodiac was a fan of electronic synth music, is anyone’s guess! I am merely highlighting the coincidence and the possible synchronicity with what followed.

Sandwiched between those two articles is one written by Marshall Schwartz which outlines a card "game". It contains diagrams showing NSWE seating. I found this very reminiscent of the Zodiac's NSWE compass diagrams which he provided in the Mt. Diablo letter.

Below this article is a review of The Mikado, which the Zodiac later refers to in his "little list" letters of 24 July 1970 and 26 July 1970. A very observant friend of mine spotted another possible Zodiac-related "clue" in that same edition of the Stanford Daily. It is hidden right next to another of the articles from Oct 31, 1969. Stanford Daily Archive October 31st 1969

Picture
Scroll to the right and look at the cartoon - not the one below the letter - but the one on the next page. Read the writing on the bottle. It says; "TESTOR MODEL AIRPLANE CEMENT" (SEE ABOVE). In the Zodiac's Nov. 9, 1969 letter he said there are no fingerprints because he covers his fingers with "AIRPLANE CEMENT."

And there is yet another very obvious “Zodiac” reference in the same edition (SEE RIGHT). The Stanford Daily, Volume 156, Issue 26, 31 October 1969 — Page 10 Advertisements Column 6 [ADVERTISEMENT].
Stanford Daily Archive October 31st 1969

The cartoon is interesting for another reason too. Charles Manson often expressed a deep admiration and respect for the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

There could well be more of these kinds of clues and references in those papers, that could be found with a bit more digging. I note for example that Steve McQueen is also referenced in an advertisement right next to the Electric Zodiac article, and we now know McQueen was one of the prominent people on the Manson Family's "death list".

Picture
And this in turn fits well with the Zodiac's "Little List" of the people he disliked. There is a possible connection there.

I contend that the Zodiac did actually read the satirical letter in the Stanford Daily and he also read Dr. Maurer's reply. He has noticed the coincidental Electric Zodiac article on page 4 of that same newspaper, and has latched on to the NSWE diagrams and The Mikado article. I believe he has later adapted these ideas into his letters, Mt. Diablo map, and compass diagrams on 26 July 1970 and 26 June 1970 (e.g. "0 is to be set to Mag. N."), and his "little list" letters of 24 July 1970 and 26 July 1970. I therefore believe that the Zodiac got some of his ideas from the Stanford Daily issue of 31 October 1969.

Why he did this is anybody's guess. But in my opinion this may have been his way of replying to the derisive letter published about him on 24 October 1969. By referencing things from the newspaper and mixing them with implied threats, he was showing that he had not forgotten about the newspaper article.

This kind of behaviour is typical of a person that tends to hold grudges for a very long time. It is also highly suggestive of someone who is anti-social or sociopathic, perhaps also paranoid, and who obsesses over trivial details for very long periods.
This kind of person potentially has a photographic memory with a strong desire to continually recall and relive past events. We have seen ample evidence of this kind of ritualistic behaviour in other serial killers, such as “BTK”, Dennis Rader.

The title of Marshall Schwartz's article also interests me. He calls it "Doubled Up", which tends to refer to pairs of dice when referencing games of chance. And this makes me immediately think of the Zodiac's ideas of "games" and "paradice". The Zodiac may have intentionally spelt "paradice" that way in order to indicate an association with games and “pairs of dice”. However the Zodiac’s idea precedes the Stanford Daily articles by several months. In fact The Zodiac first introduces the concept of "Paradice" on 31 July 1969. But there is a semantic similarity evident between the words “Doubled up” and the Zodiac’s Mount “Diablo”.

The Zodiac drew the following creepy picture in the infamous Halloween “BOO” card that he sent to Paul Avery at the San Francisco Chronicle on October 27th 1970. The card was clearly intended to rattle Avery. It has been speculated that the card may have been the Zodiac’s retaliation for Avery having called him a “latent homosexual” in one of his articles.

Picture
The Zodiac’s drawing of the intersecting Paradice/Slaves cross interests me for two reasons. Firstly it is a perfect match for the Order of the Rainbow for girls – an obscure but seemingly obvious Masonic reference for anyone who may be familiar with the symbol. The number of diamond characters on the Order of the Rainbow cross precisely matches the number of vertical letters in “PARADICE”. Also the off-centred balance of the “CROSS OF COLOUR” lettering matches well with the off-centre lettering of the Zodiac’s “SLAVES”. I have superimposed the two images (below) to illustrate this.

It is possible that the Zodiac was alluding to (or perhaps even playing homage to) Charles Manson’s Order of the Rainbow (ATWA), however ATWA was not widely known until the 1970s and it is difficult to know for sure exactly when the term was first coined. Also, the Order of Rainbows cross resembles a sword, which a devout Manson follower named Sandra Good drew in a rather Zodiac-esque sketch.

Now back to the timeline.
November 5th 1969: Someone claiming to be the Zodiac calls emergency and threatens to be on Stanford Campus in 10 minutes. Two hours later, nobody showed. This was possibly a hoax perpetrated by a student, and the entire story may be fictional, as campus rags sometimes invented such stories simply for their shock value. According to the article writer, the police took the matter very seriously. I cannot verify if this event actually took place in the days prior to 5 November, but I have a feeling the story may be true. Given that the Zodiac appears to have "borrowed" or rehashed ideas from that newspaper and re-worked them for his own agenda, does make it seem like he had revenge on his mind.

October 12th 1974: Arlis Perry is murdered in STANFORD at the Stanford Memorial Church. The crime showed some of the hallmark modus operandi of the Zodiac killer. If he was responsible, was the Zodiac still enacting his revenge on Stanford? I wonder about this, given that the date of her killing was in October, the very same month in which Craig Wilson's satirical and mocking article appeared in the Stanford Daily !! Could the Zodiac have held a grudge for a full 5 years? I think he did, because less than 10 months beforehand he had repeated more lines from The Mikado in his so-called Exorcist letter of 29th Jan 1974: “He plunged himself into the billowy wave and an echo arose from the suicide's grave, titwillo titwillo titwillo”.

Another point to note is that on the page immediately following Craig Wilson’s mocking and taunting letter to the Zodiac, there appeared an article about the Catholic faith and an advertisement for the Stanford Memorial Church! Coincidence? Well yes, the placement of the Stanford Memorial Church ad and the articles clearly were the result of chance, as they were never intended for the Zodiac. BUT the Zodiac was most likely a psychopath! At the very least he showed the capacity to be a vengeful egotist. I am convinced that the Zodiac selected various ideas from the same editions of the Stanford Daily that contained articles pertaining to him, and he found ways to incorporate those subjects and themes into his revenge. His aim was basically to “mock” and taunt Stanford in return, using the only methods that he believed he could control.

The Zodiac’s Revenge on Stanford?
Now I am the first to admit I know very little about psychopaths or how they think, but I believe many a psychopath has made it their mission in life to exact revenge against the people who they think have wronged them. I believe the Zodiac was egotistical and vindictive, and also vengeful.

I may have already provided a plausible reason for the Zodiac's sudden interest in seemingly disparate things like The Mikado and compass directions. I now think these were all a part of his crazy and elaborate way of expressing his revenge on the Stanford Daily newspaper for having mocked and taunted him. But apart from the threatening phone call, it is highly likely that none of the staff or students ever noticed the connections with the things the Zodiac was to later write about in his letters. If it is a case of what came first the chicken or the egg, it is very clear to me that from the above timeline the Stanford Daily newspaper articles came first and the Zodiac's rehashing of subject matter relating to articles from those same newspapers came later.

Listed below are some of the murders that occurred on Stanford University, or which involved recent graduates of the university, that I think can possibly be attributed to the Zodiac. I know I may be getting into Charles Manson, Ted Bundy / Son of Sam “territory" here, but I think it also intersects with what we know about the Zodiac.

I personally think that the Zodiac was out for revenge because of that derogatory student article about him in 1969. He wanted pay back and decided to take away some of Stanford's bright young people as a form of retribution. And moreover, in his typically cryptic and overthe-top manner, he had even tried to “clue people in” to this fact, perhaps even to warn them.

By referencing things from that same issue of the Stanford Daily, such as The Mikado - from a page that coincidentally also mentioned the name Zodiac - he was telling everybody that he had not forgotten about the article that had humiliated him. We should also remember that the 1969 article by Craig Wilson had also presented him with an open invitation to visit the campus at a day and time of his choosing. I personally believe the Zodiac followed up on this invitation in his own way.

As for why he didn't go after Craig Wilson or any of the other newspaper staff, I think this is in keeping with the Zodiac's M.O. He never went after Paul Avery or anyone else from the San Francisco Chronicle. But he would kill somebody else in a seemingly random and unmotivated way as a form of “payback”. He killed as if in a predatory and opportunistic manner. For the most part, he seemingly selected his victims at random, but we also know from his attack on two civilians at Lake Berryessa that he may have stalked some of his victims beforehand. The elaborate costume that he wore in this case suggested considerable advance planning.

We know from his letters, that the Zodiac intended any attack on an individual to have far greater meaning than the death of an individual. It was intended as an attack on an entire city or place e.g. “San Francisco” or “society” as a whole. Basically he wanted families to suffer, schools to mourn, and whole communities to tremble in fear. It was very much an anonymous ego trip for him. So I think when he decided to enact revenge on Stanford, the same rules applied. He selected young campus students and graduates – people who were not only loved and cherished, but potentially among Stanford’s brightest and best and most beautiful.

As to why the Zodiac fell silent early in 1974 is anyone’s guess. Some experts believe he got nervous after almost getting caught leaving the scene of Paul Stine’s murder. It is therefore possible that he was deliberately keeping a low profile or he may even have skipped town. Others speculate he may have committed suicide or ended up in a mental asylum. He may have been incarcerated after committing some other offense that was not linked to the Zodiac case. Then he just “fell through the cracks”. Of course, another theory is that he just kept on killing, but had decided not to advertise and boast about his crimes like before.

I am not saying that all of the following murders can be attributed to the Zodiac, but I think some of them possibly could be.

February 13th 1973: Leslie Marie Perlov, 21, was found strangled in the foothills above Stanford University. The victim resided in Los Altos Hills. She was spotted lying in a clump of bushes with her blue scarf wrapped tightly around her neck. Authorities said she had been missing since Tuesday. An unidentified man was seen talking to someone in Miss Perlov's car. The incident occurred about three hours after Miss Perlov was seen leaving North County Law Library in Palo Alto where she worked as a clerk. Her car was found about three miles from the library. The car keys were missing. A helicopter search for Miss Perlov accidentally turned up the body of Mark Rosvoldt, 25 of Barron Park, an apparent suicide. A sawn off shotgun was at his side. Authorities said there was no apparent connection between the deaths, although both bodies were found in the same pasture. No leads or clues were present and the case went cold.  Stanford Daily Article 1  Stanford Daily Article 2
PictureAttendants remove the body of David Levine
September 11th 1973: David Sidney Levine, aged 19, a senior in physics from Ithaca, N.Y., was found early on the morning of Sept. 11 by a jogger. Levine’s body was found on a walkway just east of the Meyer Library. His assailant had stabbed him 15 times in the back and side with a long knife. He was last seen leaving the physics department at 1 a.m. The killing was perhaps motivated by a jealous rage from a fellow student, but no leads or clues were ever found. The use of a long-bladed knife and a seemingly unmotivated, unexpected, and random attack is highly reminiscent of the Zodiac’s M.O. Stanford Article.

March 24th 1974: Janet Ann Taylor, 21, daughter of former athletic director Chuck Taylor, was found strangled by hand near the intersection of Mayfield Ave. and Junipero Serra Blvd. The murder was strangely similar to Perlov’s: she too died by strangulation and was not molested. Her purses were missing and she was found barefoot in a raincoat. The theft of a trivial amount of money is reminiscent of the murder (attributed to the Zodiac) of taxi cab driver Paul Stine on 11 October 1969. Stanford Daily Article

October 12th, 1974:  Arlis Kay Perry was a 19-year-old newlywed murdered inside Stanford Memorial Church on October 12, 1974. Arlis Perry moved to Stanford University with her husband, who was a sophomore pre-med student. At the time of her murder, she'd been working as a receptionist at a local law firm. Her body was arranged in a symbolic shape very reminiscent of the symbolic shape used by the Zodiac on one of his mailed envelopes. Stanford Daily Article

Celtic and various pagan symbolism. The following illustrations show standard Masonic symbols, which bear a striking similarity to the Zodiac’s symbols.
And there was one more suspicious death involving a member of Stanford University.

July 18th 1976: Edward McNeill, postdoctoral researcher in chemistry, was found strangled and bound with adhesive tape in his Menlo Park apartment.
"A coroner's examination indicated that he may have been bound with adhesive tape and strangled. The body of Edward McNeill. 25. was discovered Tuesday night by his landlady and a friend in his apartment at 782 Coleman Avenue. The coroner's examination disclosed that he had been dead for approximately two days and tentatively designated strangulation as the cause of death. The examination also discovered traces of adhesive tape on McNeill's hands and mouth. "We're still in the preliminary stages of the investigation," said Deputy Chief Robert Brickley of the Menlo Park police." Stanford Daily Article.

Manson and Zodiac’s Shared Symbolism. Charles Manson frequently used Masonic symbolism and also Satanic symbolism. He even borrowed concepts from the Masons, such as the Order of the Rainbow. I think he may have done this because his surname "Mason" was semantically similar to "Manson" and he was, of course, very fond of the idea of secretive cults and churches.

Manson’s ATWA symbolism (see image on left) is remarkably like the Zodiac’s symbolism. This logically suggests the two identities may have been associated in some way. Many people claim the similarities are merely the result of coincidence or a desire for other anti-social types to "copy-cat" in order to gain publicity for their own crusades and agendas. It is of course possible that Manson merely borrowed the Zodiac's symbolism to help publicize his beliefs and agenda. Notoriety tends to breed notoriety, and we see other copycats like Son of Sam later trying to glom on to the Zodiac persona. Nevertheless there are some striking similarities in the symbolism. It would appear that some of the symbols used by the Zodiac were later rehashed by Manson, however some of Manson's symbols may have actually predated their use by the Zodiac. Here is a sample of ATWA symbolism from the Manson cult. Symbol for Air, Trees, Water, Animals. I cannot help but notice that the shape is very reminiscent of the body arrangement of Arlis Perry at the Stanford Memorial Church. There has long been speculation that either Manson or the Zodiac were responsible for her murder, however the finger has also been pointed at obscure Satanic cults.
Thanks again to Ray Jenkins.

340 CIPHER- EMBEDDED SYMMETRY

This is a rehash of earlier articles concerning the 340 cipher and 13 Symbol cipher, regarding their symmetry and correlation to one another. If you are familiar with the 888 theory, then you need go no further.
The 340 cipher was the second cipher mailed on November 8th 1969- the 13 symbol cipher was the third cipher mailed on April 20th 1970, separated by just over five months. The Zodiac would refer to his 340 cipher at the beginning of the April 20th letter, stating: "This is the Zodiac speaking. By the way have you cracked the last cipher I sent you. My name is...."
This could be a simple clue leading into his new cipher, however, the author of the letter is highly unlikely to submit his real name. In addition, it is simply too short a code to be verifiable, and the Zodiac Killer must surely have known this if he had any rudimentary knowledge of code breaking. But with a clue or key affixed to the 13 symbol code, then we may have a chance.
Up to this point in time we only knew the murderer by the pseudonym Zodiac, so let us complete the introduction on the April 20th 1970 letter: "This is the Zodiac speaking. By the way have you cracked the last cipher I sent you. My name is Zodiac."  This however sounds a little flawed, so it is imperative we replace Zodiac with an alternative, something possibly embedded within the name Zodiac itself.

The 340 cipher has been entered into every powerful computer known to man with no solution being found, leading many people to believe it has no solution at all, and is in effect total 'gibberish.'  I don't know about the entirety of the 340 cipher, but the final twentieth line of the cipher does contain perfect symmetry in six of the final eight characters. In addition eight of the final nine characters are effectively carried forward from the 340 cipher to the 13 Symbol cipher, linking cipher two and cipher three together. In the 13 Symbol cipher he did refer to "
My name is..," so we will look for his pseudonym in the 340 cipher and take this as the clue.
We already know that six symbols on the twentieth line of the 340 cipher look very similar to his pseudonym Zodiac, but was this unintentional or deliberate. To find this out we shall look at the symmetry of both ciphers.
The 13 symbol cipher from a character standpoint is extremely organized. It starts and ends with three alphabetical characters. The three circled 8's are symmetrically placed in positions 5, 7 and 9. The Zodiac symbol and 'upside down Aries' symbol are four in from either side. Either the Zodiac just happened upon this symmetry, or he designed it for purpose.
Bearing this symmetry in mind, we will look for a symmetrical answer in both the 340 cipher and 13 Symbol cipher, and in addition symmetry between the two.
The Zodiac Killer was undoubtedly an egotist, so it wouldn't be all that surprising if he used his own pseudonym in the clue, and embedded the answer within the name Zodiac. In the following examination I will be using the identical mathematical technique on both the 340 cipher and 13 Symbol cipher, to show perfect symmetry in both instances. It was this egotism that led me to believe the clue resided in the 'near' Zodiac on the twentieth line of the 340 cipher. So using a comparison technique, I placed the proper spelling of Zodiac under the 'near' Zodiac and simply counted the numerical alphabetical difference in the columns. But first let us take a look at the 13 Symbol cipher and note the bottom two lines in the diagram below.
Because of not only the existing symmetry within this cipher, but the fact it was thirteen characters in length, began with an A and ended with an M, along with Zodiac's penchant for word games, it seemed the obvious choice to place the first 13 letters of the alphabet under the cipher.
A to A = 0, B to E = 3, C to N = 11, F to K = 5, H to M = 5, K to N = 3, A to L = 11.
It is achieved by staying within the alphabet and counting the numerical distance between the letters. Obviously, when we do not have two alphabetical characters there can be no difference, so a zero is attributed. You could attribute an X, it actually makes no difference to the resulting symmetry.

Picture
Highlighted in red and green the obvious symmetry can be observed. But how likely can this be created by accident.
By taking the three circled 8's as H's, it can still be seen that only three natural numbers are ever produced - 3, 1 and 5.
How do we know if this is the technique that Zodiac employed? If we apply this technique to the 'near' Zodiac on the twentieth line of the 340 cipher using the correct spelling of Zodiac and it again produces perfect symmetry, then we have possibly bolstered our case. If, in addition, it produces something significant that relates to the 13 Symbol cipher, does it then become even more compelling? The most obvious choice this time is to place Zodiac underneath the six symbols on the twentieth line, like so:
Picture
Using the identical technique we used in the 13 Symbol cipher, we shall again count the numerical difference in the columns.
Z to Z = 0, O to O = 0, D to triangle = 0, I to A = 8, A to I = 8, C to K = 8.
That is three 0's and three 8's, carried forward to the 13 Symbol cipher on April 20th 1970. But that is not all.
Either side of the 'near' Zodiac on the twentieth line of the 340 cipher we have the crosshairs and an 'inverted Aries' in part.
Both of which are situated on the 13 Symbol cipher, either side of the circled 8's (shown in the red rectangular boxes above).
This means, that effectively eight characters out of the last nine were effectively carried forward from the 340 cipher to the 13 symbol cipher. It could be argued that the last eight characters of the 340 cipher were carried forward, the plus sign (+) at the end of the 340 cipher signifying their addition to the 13 Symbol cipher.
Zodiac is now represented by the three circled 8's. 'In Christian numerology, the number 888 represents Jesus, or sometimes more specifically Christ the Redeemer. This representation may be justified either through gematria, by counting the letter values of the Greek transliteration of Jesus' name, or as an opposing value to 666, the number of the beast.' Wikipedia. This may be important when we consider the Zodiac's tendency to speak of "paradise" and the "afterlife" in many of his communications, in particular his 408 cipher. He would also cross "paradice" and "slaves" in the form of a crucifix on the Halloween card, as well as pasting a red crucifix on the 13 Hole postcard.
You can see in the above diagram that the letters K and M are embedded within the three 8's and therefore embedded in the name Zodiac. Were these his initials, and was he elevating himself to divine status? He certainly had the ego for it.

# There are some additional features of interest:
The 408 cipher was divided up into three sections of 8 lines and mailed to three different newspapers.
The final line of the 408 cipher contains an M and reversed K.
The final line of the 340 cipher contains an M and reversed K.
The 13 Symbol cipher contains the letter M and K.
The final character at the end of each of the three communications of the 408 cipher is either an M or reversed K.
The top line of the 32 Symbol cipher mailed on
June 26th 1970 contains an M and reversed K.

ZODIAC KILLER SERIES ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL

$

Picture
The History Channel series about the Zodiac Killer will begin on Tuesday November 14th 2017 and run for five consecutive weeks, examining certain aspects of the Zodiac case, promising new findings on the ciphers and more.
The images on the right are of Cheri Jo Bates trousers being tested in the laboratory and the crime scene photograph taken in the Riverside campus alleyway on October 31st 1966.
The promotion attached to the upper image states "AISOCC Review Board Member Suzanna Ryan, Sal LaBarbera and Detective Kenneth Mains used the M-Vac System to extract DNA from clothing of a potential Zodiac victim at our AISOCC Laboratory. What they found after 50 years is shocking....tune into the History Channel on November 14th at 10.00 pm Eastern Standard Time to find out more...."

Suzanna Ryan specializes in forensic serology and DNA analysis, with over 15 years experience in the field. Forensic serology is the detection, classification and study of various bodily fluids such as blood, semen, fecal matter and perspiration, and their relationship to a crime scene.
The M-Vac system is used in such instances when a victim (in our case Cheri Jo Bates) has been grabbed or manhandled, and the perpetrator has left touch DNA, invisible to the naked eye. The M-Vac system is capable of extracting the touch DNA, to enable the laboratory to generate a genetic profile of the suspect. It uses a wet vacuum system in which a buffer will be sprayed onto the trousers, while at the same time the freed particles will be sucked into a collection bottle for testing. It is used when other techniques have failed, such as swabbing and taping. The samples collected may be incredibly small, so polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is often used to amplify the sample. The sample could be semen, skin cells, saliva or blood. "The M-Vac was able to collect anywhere from 36% to 189% more DNA from experimental evidence items such as extremely dilute blood (1:5000 – 1:25,000) on shirts, rocks, and wood and from touch DNA on knit caps and duct tape." Ryan Forensic
Since 2002, when Cydne Holt secured a partial DNA profile of the Zodiac Killer from communications mailed by the killer, the field of forensic DNA analysis has come a long way, including the detection and examination of the male Y-chromosome in mixed samples. "
The Y chromosome DNA testing enables examination of the male-specific portion of biological evidence. This capability can be especially important in situations where a small amount of male DNA may be recovered in the presence of excess female DNA, such as in sexual assault evidence." link.

PictureThe Hunt for the Zodiac Killer- begins November 14th
This is particularly relevant in the case of Cheri Jo Bates, where small traces of male DNA may be present in the mixed sample on her trousers, which were inevitably laden with her own blood after the savage knife attack in 1966.
The murderer of Cheri Jo Bates could easily have cut himself while inflicting the numerous injuries on the young woman, either from his hand slipping down the knife as it became soaked with blood, or quite possibly from the knife folding in on itself, had it broke or malfunctioned. The author of the 'Confession' letter did state "I plunged the knife into her and it broke. I then finished the job by cutting her throat." Clearly no knife blade was recovered at autopsy or on the alleyway floor, so if the author of the 'Confession' letter was truthful, it is most likely the killer had a small-bladed pocket knife which could easily have closed onto his fingers or hand, secreting blood onto the clothes of Cheri Jo Bates.
The promotion material promises "what they found after 50 years is shocking." So, if the hype is to be believed, we would have to assume that the M-Vac system possibly retrieved incriminating DNA evidence, likely from the trousers of Cheri Jo Bates, although one would expect her upper garments are the more likely area to have contained the fingerprint of the killer. However, touch DNA samples can produce erroneous and misleading results, the sample being so incredibly small, it is extremely susceptible  to contamination. Hope you enjoy the series.

THE BIBLE CODE OF A KILLER

PictureAuthor: Llywelyn2000
This is again a modernization of a previous article and the last time I will tackle this subject.
The Zodiac created four ciphers, of which only one has ever been solved and confirmed by overwhelming consensus.
The third code is simply too short to achieve any meaningful decryption and the 'Button' letter '32 Symbol' code has only three repeating characters, making these two codes, without a key, effectively unbreakable. If we had the key however, then we would be back in business.
It is perfectly reasonable after the solve by Donald Gene and Bettye June Harden in the August of 1969, to believe that all the remaining ciphers contain a message, after all, what would be the point of them, other than a joke on Zodiac's part.
It is my contention that the remaining three ciphers are all probably linked by religion, and Jesus Christ in particular.
The Zodiac chose a Celtic Cross style moniker, talked of "paradice" and the "afterlife," and placed crucifix style designs in his 'Halloween' and '13 Hole' postcards. You could say the Zodiac Code was the forerunner to the Da Vinci Code.
The key to the Zodiac Code is the previously discussed '13 Symbol' cipher, where the Zodiac splits the alphabet A through M to expose perfect symmetry in the third cipher. This is the template we shall use in the '13 Symbol' and '32 Symbol' ciphers, and in both instances arrive at exactly the same holy number.
The Zodiac crosshairs can be noted in every cipher or code, so it is imperative we derive a mathematical figure for this moniker. But first we shall present the Zodiac Code that will be used on both ciphers.

Picture
The alphabet on the right has been split symmetrically into two halves. A through M was used in the Embedded Symmetry article, in which only the numbers 3, 1 and 5 were ever generated. The number 315 can be generated in several ways using the Zodiac Killer communications, but the simplest way is to take the Zodiac horoscope.
The Zodiac used what appeared to be an upside-down Aries symbol on the April 20th 1970  '13 Symbol' cipher. Many people also considered that the three circled 8's were in fact three circled Taurus symbols. But the reason the Zodiac Killer circled them, was possibly so they could be interpreted as both. Since we are dealing with the Zodiac horoscope, we will take the characters as one Aries and three Taurus symbols.

Picture
On the left is the Zodiac horoscope placed into the Zodiac Code (above).
Because we will be using Aries and Taurus in the '13 Symbol' cipher, I will explain how to arrive at the figures in brackets:
ARIES = A+R+I+E+S = 1+5+5+5+6 = 22.
TAURUS = T+A+U+R+U+S = 7+1+6+5+6+6 =31.
ARIES =22, TAURUS = 31.

Before we move on it is important to mention the following again.
'In Christian numerology, the number 888 represents Jesus, or sometimes more specifically Christ the Redeemer. This representation may be justified either through gematria, by counting the letter values of the Greek transliteration of Jesus' name, or as an opposing value to 666, the number of the beastWikipedia.
In English gematria the figure for Jesus is 444'.
If the Zodiac was creating his own bible code and referencing the rebirth of Christ using the number 8 for infinity, one would hope to find the figure 444 in the '13 Symbol' cipher shown below.

Let us proceed and place the numbers alongside the relevant characters (see below).
Notice again how the alphabetical characters only produce the figures 3, 1 and 5, as does the figure 315 representing the Zodiac crosshairs.
The total value of the '13 Symbol' cipher is 444, representing Jesus.

Picture
We shall now move on to the '32 Symbol' cipher mailed just two months after the previous cipher. It contained only three repeating characters, the letter C, the letter O and the clear triangle, making it impossible to solve without a recognized key.
This led me to believe that these two ciphers were only solvable by some form of mathematical key.
Below I have used the same technique, using the Zodiac Code, representing the letters of the '32 Symbol' cipher by numbers. The Zodiac crosshairs are again attributed the 315 value and the Aries symbol the figure 22 once more. This time however, we have an Omega symbol, so we have to attribute it a figure.
OMEGA = O+M+E+G+A = 2+1+5+7+1 = 16. The six geometric shapes in the '32 Symbol' cipher cannot be attributed a name, and therefore cannot be attributed a value. They have been marked with a red X.
You can see below, that when the numerical values are added up we arrive at the figure 444 once again.
Zodiac representing the figure 888, and both the remaining ciphers totaling 888. Whether it be 444 or 888, the reference to Jesus or Jesus Christ through the bible code of the Zodiac Killer is certainly possible.

The '408' cipher was divided up into three parts and mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle, Vallejo Times-Herald and San Francisco Examiner newspapers, but the final 18 characters of this cipher were unable to be decoded. Many speculated as to whether this was just filler to create three equal parts of 8 lines. Was this the rudimentary beginnings of 888, that he would carry through to his remaining ciphers and the name Zodiac itself ?

THE EQUINOX LETTER

$

In 1975, an FBI document detailed a possible Zodiac correspondence, which has become known as the 'Equinox' letter.
The slip of paper was yellow in color and the message was largely handwritten in blue felt tip pen. The style of the writing has more in common with the Zodiac 'Red Phantom' letter rather than his copious other earlier communications, nevertheless it is interesting for a number of reasons, other than the obvious astrology connection.
A man from Fresno, California, handed it in to law enforcement and stated that 'over the July 4th 1975 weekend he had visited his brother-in-law at his residence in Oakland, California. During the visit his brother-in-law had showed him a 1968 Datsun 1600 sports car bearing California license plates, which he said had been given to him a week before by a co-employee. The car had not been driven for some time and had no 1975 registration tags. In the front floorboard of the vehicle he found the enclosed note among some newspapers and other discarded papers. He said he read a good deal about the Zodiac murder case and feels this note may have been written by Zodiac. He advised he further suspects that his brother-in-law may be involved because of his hippy-type life style and because his brother-in-law once told him he was at the scene of the taxicab driver murder in San Francisco the night it occurred and made very discouraging remarks about the police investigation into the matter. He advised he reported this to the Fresno Police Department but did not feel that anything was done with the information, and he, therefore, contacted the FBI with his present information.'
Picture
The note began with EQUINOX 3:33 pm.
The note appeared to be almost three years old, based on the date September 22nd 1972, offered on the next line.
A quick check of the September 22nd Equinox in 1972 for Oakland, gives us a Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) of 15:32 or 3:32 pm, almost the exact time displayed on the 'Equinox' letter.
At the foot of the note the author has highlighted in bold capitals 'FULL ARIES MOON.' September 22nd 1972 was a full moon. September 22nd is the final day of Virgo in the horoscope calendar.
The 14th April (4/14/41) falls under the ARIES sign, but there was no full moon in 1941 for this date. It was a full moon on April 11th 1941 in Aries.
It was a new moon on October 11th 1969 when Paul Stine was murdered in San Francisco.
Seemingly Phil G was an Aries and September 22nd 1972 was a full moon.
The note began with "Equinox 3:33 pm. Can't make it Sat. Nite but the spell is broken & I hope I'll see you more than ever?"
Just under three months prior to this letter Edward J Salmina, sports editor of the Novato Advance received a hand-printed 'death note' signed Zodiac. The newspaper article of June 30th 1972 read 'The hand-printed letter said: "If you leave your house past 3:13:47 on the next ten Saturdays, you will be killed." In the lower left corner under the heading "message" were a series of symbols. Salmina of 25 Crescent Lane told police he didn't know who or why anyone would send him such a letter.'  Crescent Lane is situated in Novato, Marin County, approximately thirty miles from Oakland (where the brother-in-law lived).
The two similarities between the 'Equinox' note and the 'Death' note sent to Edward J Salmina were firstly, the time presented on each correspondence. The first note, sent just prior to June 30th 1972 stated a time of 3:13:47, the second note on September 22nd 1972, a time of 3:33 pm. only 19 minutes difference. The second similarity was the mention of Saturday in both notes. Incidentally, ten Saturdays from the date of the 'Death' note would have been September 2nd 1972, twenty days before the 'Equinox' note.

Picture
The third event in this 30 mile radius was the attempted murder of Isobel Watson.
Isobel Watson (33) had just got off the bus on the evening of April 7th 1972, and was walking home along Pine Hill Road, Tamalpais Valley, Marin County at 9.00 pm, when a light colored vehicle veered towards her, knocking her to the ground. [view on google maps]. The driver exited his vehicle offering to take her home, but after she had refused his offer of apparent help a second time, the concerned citizen suddenly became enraged, pulling out a knife and stabbing the woman in the neck and shoulder. Her screams alerted the neighborhood, forcing the assailant into a hasty retreat from the scene.
She was treated at Marin General Hospital and fortunately survived the brutal attack.
Her description of the man alerted investigators to a possible Zodiac connection, that of a man with heavy rimmed black glasses, in his early 40's, 5' 9" in height and short brown hair. It was not overlooked by police that the killer had attempted to lure the woman into his vehicle, not dissimilar to the method employed in the Modesto abduction of Kathleen Johns.
These are three unlikely Zodiac connections, however all three occurred in relatively close proximity to one another within a six month period.

The first thing I would like to say is a big thank you to all the contributors and visitors to this site over the last five years, and those lately who have kindly made donations to Paypal. It may not seem so, but new Zodiac material is becoming harder and harder to create, as every nook and cranny of the case has been covered extensively and explored in ever minute detail. Having now written over 320 articles since September 2012, it is time to try something different.
That means moving into podcasts. Primarily these podcasts will cover every aspect of Lake Herman Road, Blue Rock Springs Park, Lake Berryessa, Presidio Heights, the murder of Cheri Jo Bates and the Modesto abduction of Kathleen Johns. But other topics will be covered as well. Some podcasts will be carefully prepared, while others will be done on the fly, unedited and raw. Sometimes it's easier listening to Zodiac material rather than reading it, and it has the added benefits of you being able to doze off to sleep while I go babbling on. If you have any topics or individual features of each crime you would like covered, let me know in comments.
Thanks for your support down the years, Richard.

340 CIPHER-UP SHIT CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLE

Picture
The History Channel will be examining the 340 cipher during its five part docudrama, beginning on November 14th 2017 in the USA. The following will examine some small features of the opening two lines of the cipher, exploring the idea that the Zodiac employed some form of 'pigpen cipher' where geometric shapes are substituted for alphabetical characters.
Below are two examples which simplistically demonstrate this concept- the first of which assumes he opened up his 340 cipher with his usual introduction "This is the Zodiac speaking." The second using the opening three letters of the cipher and turning it into familiar wording in respect to the Zodiac murders.
Bearing in mind the 'Bus Bomb' letter immediately followed the 'Dripping Pen' card, it could be argued that the November 9th 1969 correspondence held the key to the 340 cipher, contained within a phrase. However, the key could change periodically throughout the cipher making it extremely difficult to break. Let us take a phrase from the 'Bus Bomb' letter such as "then set the shit off," and use the swear word "shit" as our template for a 'pigpen style cipher' (shown above). It may be typical Zodiac humor. We shall then apply "This is the Zodiac speaking" to the first and second lines of the cipher, applying "I have killed" as the follow up, reminiscent of his opening phrase in the 'Bus Bomb' letter, where he stated "This is the Zodiac speaking up to the end of Oct I have killed 7 people."

Picture
The letter next to the black intersecting lines above is represented by that 'V' formation and its appropriate angle.
The word "shit" in both diagrams is spelled out clockwise. The red circled 'V' characters on the right marry up with the two diagrams above. The blue circled character does not- unless of course after a set number of deciphered characters the key is rotated. Diagram 1 would have to be rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise, whereas Diagram 2 would have to be rotated 45 degrees anticlockwise, so that the 'I' in Zodiac now matches the key again.
If we take the 340 cipher and the April 20th 1970 '13 Symbol' cipher as somehow connected, then by adding the opening three alphabetical characters of the 340 cipher to the last three alphabetical characters of the '13 Symbol' cipher (in reverse), the name 'HERMAN' is created. By adding the last alphabetical character of the 340 cipher to the first three alphabetical characters of the '13 Symbol' cipher, we create an anagram of 'KANE'. This can also be achieved using the first four alphabetical characters of the '13 Symbol' cipher. This really doesn't mean much or get us anywhere, but it just leads us to our second example of the type of key Zodiac could have used. The next diagram (below) shows the 'V' symbols arranged around a circle- the two red circled symbols are two the Zodiac never used in the 340 cipher and can be disregarded.

Picture
The alphabetical letters M, N, O, P, Q and R have been placed clockwise around the circumference of the circle- each one representing a Zodiac 'V' symbol. The symbol itself rotates 45 degrees as it moves clockwise around the circle
Let us now take 'Herman' and extend it to 'Herman Road' something we are familiar with, and place it at the beginning of the 340 cipher.
The letters M, N, R and O in 'Herman Road' match the clockwise alphabetical key on the left. It can be noted that the key fails after four 'V' symbols, as in the above example. So once again the key would rotate forwards or backwards. To be specific- the 'V' symbols would switch places through 135 degrees clockwise, or possibly anticlockwise. Then 'murders' incorporates the new key.
Had the Zodiac employed something similar, there is no limit to his creativity, or the number of key rotations he could employ. Additionally, different key configurations can be created for the same alphabetical letter, making it even harder.
The images at the top of the Wikipedia page show how this approach can be adapted to any number of configurations. The four dots shown in the 'pigpen cipher' examples, remind us of the 'Halloween' card configuration. But whether this was some form of key or clue has yet to be fully established. The two examples presented above are undoubtedly incorrect, however, they serve the purpose of showing how devilishly creative the Zodiac could have become when he concealed his message on November 8th 1969.

A home location for the Zodiac Killer was previously examined based on his movements after the July 4th 1969 Blue Rock Springs Park shooting and his possible misdirection in the August 4th 1969 'Debut of Zodiac' letter, where he stated "The man who told police that my car was brown was a negro about 40-45 rather shabbly dressed. I was in this phone booth having some fun with the Vallejo cop when he was walking by. When I hung the phone up the damn thing began to ring & that drew his attention to me + my car." It was argued, that by drawing our attention to the description of the male negro, and the fact he had spotted the Zodiac's brown car, the killer was in fact disguising the reality, that he had actually walked to the payphone at Springs and Tuolumne rather than driven, thereby safeguarding his identity.
Approximating the attack at Blue Rock Springs Park to midnight, had he lived in the vicinity of the payphone, then his journey time from the attack site would have been 10 minutes. Allowing for a further 10 minute turnaround to park his vehicle, ditch his weapon, change his clothes and prepare himself, we are left with a reasonable estimate of 15-20 minutes walking time to the payphone, affording him a reasonable buffer zone to his residence or base location.
Many observers have speculated as to whether the Zodiac Killer knew any of his victims, or had crossed paths with them at any point in time. There is no solid evidence to believe such a relationship ever existed, but to even try to contend one existed, common ground must be sought. If our killer lived 15-20 minutes walking distance from the payphone, then it is reasonable to assert that he likely interacted with neighbors and the local community, by way of convenience stores, churches and community centers.
Although not fully established, the Zodiac Killer has been touted as having a military connection. It has also been suggested he may have belonged to a secret society, fraternal organization or satanic circle. So, in an attempt to give this notion a fair examination, we must first look at the locale in a 15-20 minute walking radius of the payphone, as well as any possible connections to the victims at Blue Rock Springs Park or Lake Herman Road, where his reign of terror began. To narrow down the search field further, the north side of the payphone was examined first, as it afforded separation from the police station nearby.

First take a look at these three repeated symbols in the 340 character cipher, mailed on November 8th 1969. The following connection, pointed out on many Zodiac forums, is extremely tenuous, nevertheless it has relevance to the following segments in the Lake Herman Road police report.
On page 31 it states "Joe was interviewed at the Faraday residence, 1930 Sereno Drive. He was a personal friend of David. He states David had no enemies to his knowledge. David met Betty Lou approximately a week ago at the Pythian Castle where they were decorating the hall for a social event."
On page 53 it states "Mrs Faraday stated she did not know Betty Lou that she and David had only been going together for a short time, she had never met Betty Lou. She stated she did not know of any enemies David may have had. She stated that on Friday night at 7.10 pm David drove his sister Debbie to a meeting of the Rainbow Girls at the Pythian Castle on Sonoma Boulevard, and David came back home at 7.20 pm and left again at 7.30 pm. Responding officer talked to Debbie Faraday, WFJ 16 years, sister of David. She relates the following David told her on the afternoon of Friday 12/20/68 that he was going out to Lake Herman Road that night because a bunch of the kids were going out there that night."
Here is an extract from the Calvary Baptist Church: "Calvary Baptist Church held its first services on Sunday, January 13, 1959. Pastor Emmit Duckett and the Fairfield Baptist Church commissioned the beginning of Calvary Baptist Church on February 1, 1959. On that day, the 20 charter members unanimously called Patrick Everitt as their pastor. The first meeting place was the Pythian Castle Hall at 2618 Sonoma Boulevard in Vallejo, California." link.
This following snippet is from the Vallejo Times-Herald newspaper on December 22nd 1968: "The Jensen girl, whose family resides at 123 Ridgewood Ct, was a native of Colorado. She was a junior and an honor student at Hogan High School. She was also grand royal guide of Prima Vera Council 32. Pythian Sunshine Girls."

On the left is the emblem of the Knights of Pythias, referring to  Friendship, Charity and Benevolence
The Knights of Pythias was the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor, and friendship that are the center of the order. The order has over 2,000 lodges in the United States and around the world, with a total membership of over 50,000 in 2003. The order is headquartered in Stoughton, Massachusetts. Some lodges meet in structures referred to as Pythian Castles. Extract from Wikipedia.
The Pythian Sisters have a youth affiliate, the Pythian Sunshine Girls, started in 1930. It is open to girls 8–20 and has local Councils in ArizonaNew MexicoCaliforniaOhioVirginia and Texas,.
Albeit one character is reversed, the 340 cipher contains the letters FBC from the Knights of Pythias emblem, on the ninth and thirteenth lines.
Had David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen come into contact with their killer through the Knights of Pythias fraternal organization- somebody who knew their plans on Friday night.
The Pythian Castle Hall at 2618 Sonoma Boulevard is only 24 minutes walking distance from the Springs and Tuolumne payphone. However, there is somewhere that lies inside our 15 minute walking radius from the payphone, that may have some greater relevance regarding the Zodiac Killer and the Knights of Pythias. Listed in the 1969 Vallejo directory under 1020 Alabama Street is The Knights of Pythias Organization 643-6087 and The Navy City Elks Lodge No 1268 643-6087.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is a fraternal order founded in 1868, with veteran services provided by the society.
The Elks pledge that "So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them." Wikipedia link.
1020 Alabama Street is approximately 14 minutes or 0.7 miles from the Springs and Tuolumne payphone, that may center the Zodiac Killer's location very close to Alabama Street and Sanoma Boulevard, or indeed
The Knights of Pythias Organization and The Navy City Elks Lodge.  The Mare Island Naval Shipyard is also in close proximity
However, If the Zodiac Killer did not live in this area, was he a staff member, or visitor of these organizations? And did he at any time cross paths with David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen? It's a slim possibility, but can it be ruled out

HISTORY CHANNEL REVIEW-NOVEMBER 14TH 2017

November 14th 2017: An interesting opening to the Zodiac Killer docudrama on the History Channel, which focused primarily on the Riverside murder of Cheri Jo Bates on October 30th 1966 and the 340 cipher mailed by the Zodiac Killer on November 8th 1969. Although punctuated throughout with the expected over dramatic 'revelations', it will indeed provide compelling viewing for most Zodiac sleuths throughout the world and hopefully invigorate new interest in the near fifty year old murder mystery.
The Riverside link to Zodiac has yet to be fully established, despite the obvious inferences suggested in the History Channel documentary- although certainly the place a fledgling Zodiac would most likely have made his mistakes, could a connection be definitively ascertained. This was a point emphasized in the show early on. However, as highlighted in many previous documentaries, trying to shoehorn suspects into certain aspects of the case while blindly disregarding the obvious discrepancies, is fraught with danger. After watching the first episode, it is easy to see how Ross Sullivan has captured the imagination of many, desperate to link the subject to the Riverside murder and the infamous Zodiac Killer- but there are serious drawbacks to this particular suspect.
Eyewitness recollections are notoriously unreliable, yet not one of the potential twelve eyewitnesses in the Zodiac case put Zodiac at 6'3", which is the height Ross Sullivan would have appeared wearing heeled military footwear.
Michael Mageau, Bryan Hartnell, Cecelia Shepard, Dr. Clifton Rayfield, David Rayfield, the three young women, Donald Fouke and the three teenagers are key players in the Zodiac case, none of whom recollect a man of this height.
Ross Sullivan was an extremely well built individual, who likely therefore had a seven inch wrist, as testified by the Timex watch retrieved from the alleyway, only ten feet from the body of Cheri Jo Bates. The Department of Justice Report stated 'Heelprints identical to those worn by Air Force personnel and a Timex wristwatch indicating the suspect had a 7" wrist circumference was found at the scene of the crime. The measurement of the heel indicated that it would have been attached to an 8 to 10 size shoe.'
In addition, apart from the sightings at Presidio Heights, where it's possible Zodiac donned Paul Stine's black-rimmed glasses, not one of the remaining eyewitnesses remember the possible killer wearing eyeglasses. The common assumption when considering a suspect, is to use a side-by-side comparison of the Presidio Heights sketch for likeness. The problem with this is twofold- firstly, we cannot be sure the sketch is a perfect representation of the actual killer, and secondly, there is no evidence to suggest the Zodiac Killer wore glasses in his everyday life.
Ross Sullivan 'apparently' disappeared after the Cheri Jo Bates murder, but the Riverside Police investigation was extremely thorough, fingerprinting and taking hair samples of countless people, that surely had to include Ross Sullivan, had he worked at the library.
Picture
Riverside City College Library staff in later years detailed how Ross Sullivan was high on their list as the murderer, an unnerving man, who wrote morbid poems. However the correspondence also stated "A couple of years ago I had called the police to ask about our suspect and was told he had an alibi for that night."
It is important to understand the ferocity of the Cheri Jo Bates murder, in which she undoubtedly scratched her assailant. Whether Ross Sullivan 'disappeared' for two weeks or not, investigators would have still checked everybody for scratches to their arms and face, and fingerprinted the suspect, yet still he evaded detection.
Detective Gren stated "There is a strong indication that Miss Bates scratched and clawed her murderer in the struggle for her life."
They would also have taken handwriting samples. If the Riverside correspondence can be matched to the Zodiac Killer, then so too can the handwriting of Ross Sullivan, which clearly must have been undertaken.
The documentary stated that Ross Sullivan can be placed in Santa Cruz, situated on the northern edge of Monterey Bay. This is 96 miles south of Vallejo and 75 miles south of San Francisco. If this were the case, we then would have to assume that Ross Sullivan, despite work commitments, took a round trip of at least 150 miles or more to perpetrate three Zodiac attacks and mail fourteen letters on varying days of the week, between July 4tth 1969 and March 13th 1971, finally implicating and drawing attention to himself and his Riverside exploits in the ''Los Angeles' letter, stating "I do have to give them credit for stumbling across my riverside activity, but they are only finding the easy ones, there are a hell of a lot more down there." Implicating oneself in the Riverside murder of Cheri Jo Bates is not the 'genius' move of a highly intelligent individual, if you worked in the Riverside City College library and knew the victim.
The "twich" and "squirm" link between the Riverside 'Confession' letter and the Zodiac's 'Little List' letter on July 26th 1970 could be a simple as Zodiac parroting key phrases he read in previously published articles on the Cheri Jo Bates murder. The odds of these words then matching falls to something far less statistically significant. It is still a noteworthy connection, warranting further investigation, but must be viewed with far more caution than that advocated.
This is not meant to argue that Ross Sullivan should not be considered as a potential suspect in the Zodiac case, only that a necessary counterbalance is required when considering any leads in an already suspect laden case.
The five part documentary should hopefully generate new interest in the Zodiac Killer investigation and create fresh impetus in a case now spanning five decades- a case that is without doubt grinding under the heavy weight of expectation.
The next episode will air on November 21st 2017.

THE CONFIRMATION LETTER

Picture
Inspired by the first episode of the Zodiac Killer docudrama, which aired on November 14th 2017, we will take a completely fresh look at the Cheri Jo Bates murder using only newspaper and magazine articles as our guide, and completely disregard anything contained in the material provided by Robert Graysmith.
It will also disregard any preconceptions of the crime formulated by investigators and the 'Confession' letter sent on November 29th 1966, approximately one month after the brutal murder.
The 'Confession' letter author likely played into the suppositions of investigators, who almost immediately ran with the narrative that Cheri Jo Bates had her Volkswagen Beetle tampered with while she was in the library, despite the fact little supports this conclusion.
Let us start in and around the library annex just before opening time.
The 'Inside Detective' magazine recalled that a Mexican-American student noticed Cheri Jo Bates close to opening time and shortly after- who stated 'he knew Cheri Jo Bates and had noticed her in the library the night in question. He said he saw the girl "writing something with a ball point pen" in her blue spiral school notebook." The boy told us he was outside about 5.30 pm, waiting for the library to open at 6, and it was then he saw the girl.'
It clearly states he had 'noticed her in the library the night in question'- therefore presumably after 6.00 pm.
The 'Inside Detective' Magazine also stated "The participants in the reenactment at the detectives' request, wore the same clothing and sat in the same seats that they had occupied the Sunday night of the murder. They were also asked to park their cars in the same places they had on the night of October 30. It had been determined that Cheri Jo (or a girl resembling her and in similar clothes) had arrived at the library about 5.40 pm and waited for about 20 minutes for the doors to be opened. The girl apparently entered the library as soon as the doors were opened at 6.00 pm, and checked out the books she had come for."

Picture
Taking this completely at face value, and the fact her library books were discovered on the passenger side seat of her vehicle, we will assume she entered the library at opening time and discharged her reading material.
Sergeant Gren stated "The girl was definitely in the library as she checked out the books. She must have been contacted by the murderer as soon as she received her books." The key words here, are she "checked out her books."
The article continued "However, other students who were acquainted with Cheri Jo said they were in the library between 6.30 and 6.40 pm- and did not see the girl during that time." Neither did Walter Siebert, who stated that "he and a few friends were in the library from 7.15 pm until 9, but did not see Miss Bates, whom they all knew. They said they saw four men dressed in work clothes sitting on a fence across from the spot where Miss Bates' car was found, but they did not know them."
It is therefore extremely likely Cheri Jo Bates entered the library at 6.00 pm and left before 6.30 pm, having checked out her books. The four men in work clothes are crucial.
They stated to investigators that "they had seen Cheri Jo near her car the previous night." But what time and where?
It is reasonable to assume it may have been slightly before 5.30 pm, since the Mexican-American student and the female eyewitness saw Cheri Jo Bates at 5.30 pm, 5.40 pm and the time she entered the library at 6.00 pm.
The Riverside City College was undergoing renovation at the time, so these four men may have been passing the area of the college campus around this time- probably working within the college campus on a Sunday, at a time when certain areas were free from student activity. This may be a reasonable supposition, because they were still in the vicinity when Walter Siebert arrived at 7.15 pm, at which time they were sitting on a fence on the north side of Terracina Drive. They may have been taking a break.
Walter Siebert and friends never laid eyes on Cheri Jo Bates that evening, nor did they, or any other person familiar with the young girl, spot her striking lime green Volkswagen Beetle (or at the very least was it reported), despite the fact it was supposedly parked only 30 yards or 90 feet east of the library entrance. Walter Siebert and friends said "they saw four men dressed in work clothes sitting on a fence across from the spot where Miss Bates' car was found, but they did not know them." They only said the four men were located across from the position the vehicle "was found", not from the position of the vehicle that evening. Indicating they never saw her vehicle on the evening of October 30th 1966. In fact, not one of the attendees to the library that evening or night stated they spotted Cheri Jo Bates' vehicle in the position it was found. "They were also asked to park their cars in the same places they had on the night of October 30", yet apparently not one parked near the lime green Volkswagen Beetle, or noted its position on Terracina Drive.

Picture
Is it possible they didn't notice her vehicle because it wasn't there? Cheri Jo Bates parked her vehicle up that evening, and was noticed by the four men (but not necessarily exactly 30 yards east of the library), who said "they had seen Cheri Jo near her car the previous night."
She then entered the library, "checked out her books," left before 6.30 pm and possibly drove away, bucking the supposition of detectives, who assumed the perpetrator disabled her vehicle while she was in the library, and wrongly concluded her vehicle remained idle from the moment she parked up, to the following morning, when her vehicle was ultimately discovered.
A perpetrator disabling her vehicle, would had to have done so approximately 90 feet from the library entrance, risking being spotted and then killed her within minutes, despite the fact the young woman's body would have lain in the alleyway for around 4 hours that evening, without anybody walking down the alleyway, and completely negating the screams being heard around 10.30 pm by at least two earwitnesses. It makes little sense, and therefore is highly unlikely.
This is why the 'Confession' letter is highly suspect. It is simply parroting what investigators immediately concluded after discovering the disabled Volkswagen Beetle, and what was widely reported in the newspapers in the aftermath of the murder. The 'Confession' letter revealed no details only privy to the murderer, and even if its author was the killer of Cheri Jo Bates, he was only too happy to concur with the conclusions of the police investigation, especially if it steered the investigators away from what really happened on October 30th 1966, and even more importantly, centered the focus around the library annex and college campus. The 'Confession' letter should have been called the 'Confirmation' letter, as it effectively confirmed to police what they already believed, whereas the truth likely lay elsewhere.
The 'Inside Detective' magazine also stated 'Two young girls who said they knew Cheri Jo, gave a taped interview to a crew from a Los Angeles television station. The girls in the interview, said that Cheri Jo had told them Sunday that she was "going to the library to meet her boyfriend." However, Sgt Gren said that while Cheri Jo had met her boyfriend in San Francisco the weekend prior to her murder, the boy was still in the Bay Area at the time of her death. The statements of the two girls were based on hearsay and not on fact Captain Cross told newsmen.'
It is clear this statement was prematurely dismissed by police, because according to the two girls, Cheri Jo Bates was supposedly "going to the library to meet her boyfriend." This cannot be misinterpreted as going to San Francisco to meet her boyfriend Dennis Highland, unless she was meeting him at a library in San Francisco.
This is from Zodiackiller.com: "The relationship between Barnett and Cheri soured after Cheri returned from San Francisco, where she had visited her steady boyfriend. Cheri informed Barnett that she had accepted this boyfriend's wedding proposal and that she and Barnett could no longer date. (This conversation with Barnett occurred less than a week before her murder.)"
It is clear that the relationships of Cheri Jo Bates were less than clear cut, so it is by no means out of the question that Cheri Jo Bates may have made alternative plans that Sunday evening, once her friend Stephanie Guttmann declined her officer at 3.45 pm that day, to accompany her to the library. Cheri Jo Bates may have originally planned to meet a "boyfriend" after the library closed that evening, but her plans could have changed when Stephanie decided not to go to the library.

Picture
Cheri Jo Bates was spotted near her vehicle by the four workmen just before 5.30 pm. We don't know where exactly she parked. The men may simply have walked past her somewhere near the college, and noticed her alongside the vehicle. It may have been in the near area it was eventually found. This would make sense, because investigators presumably asked the four men where they spotted Cheri Jo Bates and her vehicle, and it likely near concurred with the position of the vehicle the following morning, thereby not raising any red flags
Later, Walter Siebert and friends noticed the same four men sitting on a fence, likely taking a break, around 7.15 pm, but they didn't notice Cheri Jo Bates or her vehicle. Therefore, it is unlikely the four men  spotted Cheri Jo Bates alongside her vehicle at 7.15 pm, because if they had, Walter Siebert and friends would likely have noticed her and the Volkswagen Beetle too, which they didn't.
Additionally, if investigators tied the two stories together, and assumed the four men noticed Cheri Jo Bates by her vehicle at 7.15 pm, then she would have supposedly been leaving the library. Had she been arriving at the library, then Walter Siebert and friends would have seen her in the library between 7.15 pm and 9.00 pm. But she couldn't have been leaving the library either, because Cheri Jo Bates had apparently entered at opening time and wasn't even spotted in the library between 6.30 pm and 6.40 pm,
If Cheri Jo Bates checked out her books prior to 6.30 pm, why would she still be next to her vehicle at 7.15 pm. Had it been tampered with while in the library, she could have simply sought assistance inside the library or from her arriving friends. The whole scenario doesn't stack up.
The four men must have spotted Cheri Jo Bates on her arrival to the library just before 5.30 pm and relayed this to police, that "they had seen Cheri Jo near her car the previous night."  At 7.15 pm, when the four men were spotted by Walter Siebert, Cheri Jo Bates and her vehicle were gone. Investigators likely assumed Cheri Jo Bates' vehicle remained throughout, as they had done from the very beginning, and the vehicle simply went unnoticed by Walter Siebert and company.
Originally her plans were to visit the library to study with Stephanie Guttmann, but possibly her plans changed and she decided to meet with this "boyfriend". The eventual murder had all the hallmarks of a spurned admirer and 'crime of passion'.
The problem we have, is why would Cheri Jo Bates' vehicle have left the library and returned to effectively the same position some 4 hours later. Had she arranged to meet the 'mystery man' outside the library just after checking her books out, gone to a secondary location, before returning her 'passenger' where she picked him up. If so, did he live nearby, and was familiar with the college campus, including the two empty houses along the alleyway. The fact that both windows were rolled down, with the keys in the ignition and doors unlocked, may suggest something erupted on their arrival back at the library.
If he is carrying her books for her, the 'mystery man' may have exited the vehicle, placed the books on the seat, closed the right door, inadvertently leaving it slightly ajar, and then proceeded to disable her vehicle in the heat of the moment to prevent her leaving. This may explain her eagerness to vacate the vehicle and seek help. She is dragged into the alleyway, and the attack begins circa 10.30 pm. The author of the  'Confession' letter, if the killer, knew that by playing into the police narrative of the crime, the investigation would remain squarely around the college campus and make his confession completely worthwhile.

THE READABILITY OF THE CONFESSION LETTER

It has long been debated whether the 'Confession' letter sent on November 29th 1966 was the work of the Zodiac Killer.
In a recent History Channel docudrama about the Zodiac Killer, the typed 'Confession' letter was analyzed, looking for words that may connect the author of the Riverside correspondence with the infamous Zodiac Killer, focusing on words such as "twich" and "squirm".
Here, we will go much further and analyze the readability level of the 'Confession' letter, and compare it with known Zodiac correspondence. The idea, is that even if the author of each correspondence was deliberately misspelling words or dumbing down the intellectual content in each letter, he should be consistently achieving the same readability level.
If there is some degree of correlation between the 'Confession' letter and the Zodiac correspondence, it may bolster the argument that the two cases are related- including the stabbing of Cheri Jo Bates and the Bay Area murders.
The readability level of the above text has an average grade level of 17.04 and a median grade level of 16.40.
The November 29th 1966 'Confession' letter has average grade level of 3.80 and a median grade level of 3.97.
These results were calculated using five tools: the Gunning fog index, the Flesch-Kincaid readability tests, the SMOG grade, the Coleman-Liau index and the Automated readability index. Here is a brief run down of each from Wikipedia and their respective link.

Gunning fog index: Ilinguistics, the Gunning fog index is a readability test for English writing. The index estimates the years of formal education a person needs to understand the text on the first reading. A fog index of 12 requires the reading level of a U.S. high school senior (around 18 years old). The test was developed by Robert Gunning, an American businessman, in 1952. The fog index is commonly used to confirm that text can be read easily by the intended audience. Texts for a wide audience generally need a fog index less than 12. Texts requiring near-universal understanding generally need an index less than 8.
Flesch-Kincaid readability tests: The Flesch–Kincaid readability tests are readability tests designed to indicate how difficult a passage in English is to understand. There are two tests, the Flesch Reading Ease, and the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level. Although they use the same core measures (word length and sentence length), they have different weighting factors.
The results of the two tests correlate approximately inversely: a text with a comparatively high score on the Reading Ease test should have a lower score on the Grade-Level test. Rudolf Flesch devised the Reading Ease evaluation; somewhat later, he and J. Peter Kincaid developed the Grade Level evaluation for the United States Navy.
SMOG grade:
The SMOG grade is a measure of readability that estimates the years of education needed to understand a piece of writing. SMOG is an acronym for Simple Measure of GobbledygookSMOG is widely used, particularly for checking health messages. The SMOG grade yields a 0.985 correlation with a standard error of 1.5159 grades with the grades of readers who had 100% comprehension of test materials. The formula for calculating the SMOG grade was developed by G. Harry McLaughlin as a more accurate and more easily calculated substitute for the Gunning fog index and published in 1969. To make calculating a text's readability as simple as possible an approximate formula was also given — count the words of three or more syllables in three 10-sentence samples, estimate the count's square root (from the nearest perfect square), and add 3.
Coleman-Liau index: The Coleman–Liau index is a readability test designed by Meri Coleman and T. L. Liau to gauge the understandability of a text. Like the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning fog indexSMOG index, and Automated Readability Index, its output approximates the U.S. grade level thought necessary to comprehend the text. Like the ARI but unlike most of the other indices, Coleman–Liau relies on characters instead of syllables per word. Although opinion varies on its accuracy as compared to the syllable/word and complex word indices, characters are more readily and accurately counted by computer programs than are syllables.
Automated readability index: The automated readability index (ARI) is a readability test for English texts, designed to gauge the understandability of a text. Like the Flesch–Kincaid grade level, Gunning fog indexSMOG indexFry readability formula, and Coleman–Liau index, it produces an approximate representation of the US grade level needed to comprehend the text.

As another guide I used the text from the
Coleman–Liau index above to generate an average grade level of 15.69 and a median grade level of 15.72. To check any section of text or the given examples, visit here
Here are the results:
The Confession letter 11/29/66 has average grade level of 3.80 and a median grade level of 3.97.
The Riverside Desktop poem 1966 has average grade level of 3.89 and a median grade level of 4.00.
The San Francisco Chronicle 7/31/69 has average grade level of 8.15 and a median grade level of 8.12.
The Debut of Zodiac letter 8/4/69 has average grade level of 6.73 and a median grade level of 5.96.
The Paul Stine letter 10/13/69 has average grade level of 7.71 and a median grade level of 7.83.
The Bus Bomb letter 11/9/69 has average grade level of 8.56 and a median grade level of 8.69.
The Melvin Belli letter 12/20/69 has average grade level of 6.25 and a median grade level of 5.66.

The readability levels of the 1966 correspondence is notably lower than the initial Zodiac correspondence, although one has to factor in the near three year maturation of the subject, if indeed they are the same individual. But both are extremely low on the scale, indicating the Zodiac Killer and author of the 'Confession' letter were either extremely uneducated, or extremely accomplished at pretending to be uneducated. Whatever the case, there is a notable shift from 1966 to 1969.
The above enlarged text has average grade level of 16.50 and a median grade level of 16.27, which highlights the difference in readability level the author in Riverside and northern California was operating at, either by intention or not.

The second episode of the The Hunt for the Zodiac Killer begins tonight at 10.03 pm EST in the USA.
The team's supercomputer CARMEL apparently has discovered a lunar pattern to the Zodiac murders.
On January 21st 2013 I discovered a link tying thirteen possible Zodiac murders in just 23 months, using the 'Perpetual Thirteen Moon Calendar,' in which a year is split into 13 months of 28 days. These thirteen murders included David Faraday (December 20th 1968), Betty Lou Jensen (December 20th 1968), Darlene Ferrin (July 4th 1969), Cecelia Shepard (September 27th 1969), Paul Stine (October 11th 1969), John Hood (February 21st 1970), Sandra Garcia (February 21st 1970), Thomas Dolan (July 4th 1970) and Homer Shadwick (July 4th 1970), all of whom were killed on a particular date within this calendar.
This lunar pattern links all the killings- but is it the one that CARMEL has uncovered? Tune in tonight and discover that I am totally wrong.

Episode four of the History Channel docudrama to air on December 5th 2017, includes analysis of the New York 'Albany' letter, authored by somebody claiming to be the Zodiac Killer.
The August 1st 1973 letter threatened to kill somebody from the Albany Medical Center on August 10th at 5.00 pm during a shift change, although nothing materialized from this threat.
Inevitable links will be made with Darlene Ferrin and her husband James Phillips- he worked for the Albany Times-Union newspaper in the same building as occupied by the Albany Knickerbocker News, forever connected to Zodiac suspect Richard Gaikowski.
However, they moved there in 1966, seven years prior to the mailing of this correspondence, so the link is tenuous at best.
Opinions vary on this letter, so take a look yourself and make your own mind up.

Picture1963 Ford Falcon
The first time that I actually saw his face, was in the winter of 1968, around the time of the Lake Herman Road shooting of David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen.
I was working as an waitress and bartender at Flamingo Joe's in Vallejo, when I got off work early to pick up my paycheck from the Melody Lounge on Sonoma Boulevard, Vallejo. The same person owned both places, so I would work at both. I also worked at the Coronado Inn for a different owner.
It was about 1.00 am when I left Flamingo Joe's to go to the Melody for my paycheck. When I walked into the Melody Lounge some male friends that I knew from Richmond called me over to have a drink and talk. I picked up my paycheck and sat with the three men for about twenty minutes. It was nearing closing time, so they walked me out to my car. Thank goodness they stood there for a few moments, as my vehicle failed to start.
I knew a lot about car maintenance because I used to watch my father regularly work on vehicles and would constantly question him about his work. I asked the men if they could check under my hood to see if my coil wire was okay and they duly obliged. They proceeded to take a look and commented "Are you Psychic or something, your coil wire is gone." They knew I needed to go home to Napa, so they removed one from someone else’s car and put it in mine. I thanked them and drove off towards Napa, when I noticed that I was perhaps being followed. This person was about an eighth of a mile back, but I felt I could possibly shake them off. As I got to my turn off, on Imola Avenue, next to Napa state Hospital, I knew that there was a dip in the road that might hide the low tail lights of my older model Pontiac Bonneville, so I turned right and drove like a bat out of hell. I believed I had lost him, but kept my foot firmly on the pedal just the same. I needed to turn on Navarre Street,  but couldn't do that safely on account of my speed, so I turned left at the next block. I then turned off my lights and made another left onto my street. It was at this point I saw a car with its lights still on, parked across the street from my home. Nobody in my neighborhood would be up that late and I didn't recognize that car.
I was curious to see who this person was, so I kept my lights off and pulled up alongside his vehicle. He was looking at my driveway as if to say 'where is she.'  When I looked at his face, I saw the hatred in his 'contorted' face and feared that even by running to my front door I may not make it. This guy looked as if he hated me and thoughts spiraled in my mind that possibly my ex-husband had hired a hit man to kill me, so he wouldn't have to pay child support for our three children.
I kept on driving back towards town, where two police officers in two police cars were talking at the gas station on the intersection of Soscol and Imola Avenue. I got out of my car and proceeded to outline what had just occurred, when the same car came across Soscol Avenue behind the gas station. There was an all-night pancake house there. I pointed at him as he crossed, but he simply looked at me talking to the officers. It certainly didn't seem to bother him, because he still drove into the parking lot of the restaurant. One officer told the other: "Joe you go check that guy out and I will follow her home to make sure she is safe."
A few months later Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau were shot in Vallejo on July 4th 1969. Michael Mageau had told investigators that the shooter's car was light brown, possibly a Falcon. This tallied with the vehicle that had followed me from Vallejo, so I called Napa Police Department and asked if they had noted the man’s name that followed me in the report that night. The woman I spoke to located the report, but it didn't show the name of the man. I didn't think to tell her that there could be two reports, because there were two officers.
That phone call to Napa Police Department was made in July 1969.

PicturePlastic clothesline retrieved by Dennis Land from Lake Berryessa
Some time later, my eldest teenage daughter was on the phone one day talking with one of her school friends. As they were conversing, her friend heard the family’s other phone ring, so left to answer it. When she came back, she said that the man on the phone had told her that he was the Zodiac Killer. I don’t remember what else was said about that call, but both my daughter and her friend were extremely frightened by the experience. I have no idea if that call was reported,  or whether the  phone call was before or after the Lake Berryessa attack on Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard. It was likely after, because the Zodiac Killer wasn't playing on our minds at the time- not until after the 27th September 1969 double stabbing. It was only then that the realization dawned that a serial killer was on the loose in our area.
During that summer of 1969, it must have been my day off work, because I was sitting outside my house on the lawn in the front yard. It was a warm day, and my next door neighbor Betty and I were talking, when my husband pulled into the driveway. He walked over to us and said: "Who in the world would steal a clothes line". That struck me as odd, because I hadn’t even noticed that it was gone. It was to the right of our driveway along our side yard, however I could now notice that most of it was missing.
I had to replace it, so I bought more at the store on Imola Avenue, where I had purchased the previous clothes line. The store was across from the State hospital, about one mile or less from my home. My neighbors and I use to talk about the patients escaping, although we believed that if and when they did, that they would go as far away as they could, not remain in the vicinity. Later, I heard that a woman on a block not far from my home had been murdered. I think the street name was Marie but cannot be certain.

On Saturday 27th September, my husband and I were both working in Vallejo that night. My shift started at 6.00 pm, so I probably left the house about 5.00 or 5:15 pm. I would work until 2.00 am, during which time my daughter would babysit her brothers.
But that night at approximately 8:30 or 9.00 pm, while my daughter was changing the baby’s diaper in the bedroom, someone was knocking on the front door of the house. There was a man at the door, who proceeded to tell my daughter that he was there to look at the house, as it was up for sale. My home was certainly not on the market.

My son had earlier bumped and cut his head, so the man offered to take him to the hospital, indicating that he thought it looked serious. My children got into the man’s car, who had a woman with him, and went to the Queen of the Valley Hospital in his black Cadillac. It wasn’t until later that we found out that there had been two victims brought into that same hospital from Lake Berryessa, both of whom had been stabbed.
The next day, or the day after, both my husband and I had the day off. He went to Soscol House, Napa,  a few miles southwest of our home, to have a couple of drinks and roll dice with his friends.
I didn’t feel like staying home that day without a car and asked Betty if she could give me a ride to get it. I got my baby ready, who was 8 months old at the time, and Betty drove us to pick up the car. She got out to help carry the things I needed for the baby. The windows were down in the car, because it was very warm that day, and we noticed that there was stuff all over the back seat and on the floor behind the driver’s seat. I opened the door to the back and picked up a garment made of black cotton cloth off the seat. It had a strange design on the front of it that I thought looked Asian- it was a white circle with a cross on top of it or over it. The black cotton material was about a yard and a half long and 36 inches wide. It had a hole with a slit towards the back, so it would fit over someone’s head. There was a wad of black paper on the floor behind the passenger’s seat, so I picked it up and opened it to see what the heck it was, and quickly realized it was like a mask that covered one’s head completely.
It was made from a paper sack and had large round holes for the eyes, although I don’t remember if there was a hole for the mouth and nose or not. It was square and flat on top just like a grocery bag and there were four 3 inch cuts at the bottom, that were bent to sit on a person’s shoulders. My initial thoughts was that it must have been an early Halloween costume. As I drove back home I noticed an awful stench filling the car. It was the paper sack. Whatever was used to make it black was creating the bad smell. So I had to throw it away in the garbage can as soon as I got home.

Picture
Once I got home I looked at everything that was put in the car. There was a neat stack of things on the floor behind the driver’s seat. On the bottom of the stack was an old dictionary, and positioned on top of that was a green plastic template with letters of the alphabet on it, and four circle cut outs, from small to large, underneath the letters. It had been used, because I could see the dark ink inside the block letters. Next to the dictionary was a ruler from Heald College and two erasers, one was a large grey one, the other pink and smaller in size. On top of the green plastic was an ammo can filled with felt tipped pens, arranged  like perhaps an artist would have, except most of the pens were very dark- one was orange or red, one was white.
At the bottom of the ammo can were three earrings, one of them was screw on with a small cross, along with a girls Timex watch with a thin grey leather band. A silver colored protractor was also inside the can with a small pencil at one end. In addition, at the very bottom, was a tiny Catholic mass book- the page that would have had the owner's name on it was torn off.

On the back seat was a clear plastic name tag, in which the name Daniel Perez was written on white paper.
When my husband came home I asked him if he had given someone a ride, because there were some strange things in the back seat of the car.  He assured me that no one had been in the car except him, and he didn’t see anything in the back seat when he got in to drive.
I surmised that maybe some guy worse the wear for drink or cannabis had mistook our car for his and put it all there.

PictureDarlene Ferrin (22)
During the Vallejo springtime of 1969, my soon to be ex-husband and myself, leased Jay’s Governor’s room on Sonoma Boulevard, across from James Sear’s, where Darlene was starting to buy her very expensive clothes. Where she got the money to do that, was something that her family didn’t understand, but nevertheless had a bad feeling about.
On Saturday nights my husband would hire a bartender to do his job- I was the waitress and would have to keep an eye on the bartenders to make sure they weren’t tapping the till. My husband would go to the Vallejo Speedway to offer the winner of the main event and his crew free drinks at our bar after the races. I was still filling in at the Coronado Inn because the money was good there. It was always crowded, as people would come from as far away as Oakland, San Francisco and Yountville.
Vallejo was a Navy town and during the 1960s the Vietnam war was still raging on- we felt a lot of sadness for the loss of these young men, who were defending our country. I lost my brother-in-law, who re-enlisted in 1969.

On July 1st 1969 my father died unexpectedly at Kaiser Hospital- he had gone in for a hernia operation and died the day before he was due to be released, from what I was told was a blood clot. I thought it was unusual for him to be found with his arm up reaching for the buzzer to get help. I wasn't aware that one would know that a clot had moved to the lungs and would have had enough time to ring for help. I was devastated beyond belief, so my husband and I went to Walnut Creek to stay by my mother’s side until after my father was buried.
Our lease was up at Jay’s Governor’s Room, but a few of my friends still liked to go there to drink. One of them was Don Porter, who I had dated. I had no idea he was in the counterfeit ring that was going on in Vallejo during that time. He was being watched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation- they were watching him in the bar while he lit ladies cigarettes with twenty dollar bills. They arrested him that night and found a lot more of the counterfeit bills in the trunk of his car. I had no idea he was doing this. He was stealing cars, chopping them up, and repainting them to sell along with his co-conspirators.
I remember one afternoon, he and I were going to San Francisco to visit somebody. His roommate was on the porch- Don said to him that we were headed to San Francisco, but he needed to stop by Darlene’s place to pick up something or drop something off. His roommate, who was short man in his 30’s with brown curly hair, who liked to play the piano, screamed at Don "I told you to never say that name ever."  I would not have remembered that name, if it weren’t for that man making such a scene.

In early October 1969, I got a day time job in Rutherford working at the Robert Mondavi Winery. While I was there, a movie was being filmed for CBS television. The star of the movie was Burt Reynolds, although at the time I didn’t know who he was, because it was before he became famous. I had a hard time not staring at him- what a hunk.
The next day the director asked me if I would like to be in the movie. I said I would if I could have one of my friends join me, so we could both be in the movie.

While we were waiting for our scene, we were in a room with Burt and a few other actors. I am not sure how I ended up with Burt lifting me up above his head and sliding me slowly down close to his body. But he said in a low voice while looking at me nose to nose, "you are one healthy girl." I still remember that moment as if it were yesterday. I was only an extra, but was a “key” extra. Some of the film was shot in St Helena, Santa Rosa, Lake Berryessa. I now wonder if Zodiac could have been there as an extra or just watching. The film was entitled “Hunters Are for Killing”, also known as “Hard Frame”.

Picture
My divorce was about final- the children and I moved away from Napa to Rio Vista where their father had moved, so they wouldn’t be too far from him. I got a job at the Spindrift Marina Restaurant on the San Joaquin river, working three days a week- the other four I spent fishing with my children.
I started getting phone calls and could hear someone breathing, but whomever it was would never say anything. Then the car kept having odd problems, like the oil filter can would fall off while I was driving and all of the oil would leak out. Or my tire would be flat while I was parked at my apartment. I was still going to Vallejo to the Coronado Inn at night from time to time and still seeing Buzz Gordon, a cop that I started to date while I was working in Vallejo in 1969. We dated for about five years, not knowing he was married at that time. Furthermore, then finding out that he had gone out with Darlene Ferrin and was a Zodiac suspect. He and I would be in his squad car, go to the areas where we thought the Zodiac Killer might go, so we could catch him. He would have his 9 millimeter ready, just in case the Zodiac showed up. I actually offered myself as a decoy to Vallejo Police Department, but they told me that they had no idea when or where Zodiac would strike again and that they didn’t have the money or manpower to do that.
I look back on that now and how foolish I was for making that offer. I always wanted to work in law enforcement and bust drug dealers, or work at solving murders. That started in the 1950s, with the case of Stephanie Bryant who was kidnapped from Berkeley on April 28th 1955, then murdered. To this day I do not feel that Burton Abbott was her killer.

My father, who worked in Oakland, but would drive through the Berkeley hills and past Stephanie Bryant's street to get home in Walnut Creek, reported seeing something or someone suspicious pertaining to that case. He gave the police a description of a car with a young girl in it. That in turn made my father a suspect. He never offered any information ever again to police.
I have no idea if the person he turned in, retaliated against our family and is now the man who plays these child like games with me or not. We did have a prowler in the 1950s, who would go into our backyard and run a stick alongside the wooden slats to make a ticking sound. I can remember when ever I was home alone, I would hold our .22 rifle, just in case the person tried to break in. Could he be the same person today?  I don't know.
While still living in Rio Vista and working only three days a week, I drove a 1967 Pontiac Firebird. I was still having problems with the oil filter falling off now and then, and my brakes kept going out. One night when I had a few female friends with me, the brakes went out and we almost ended up in the river. The phone calls were still coming at night from someone who would never speak- only breathing could be heard. I don’t believe I was thinking that it was the man I got away from in Vallejo a few years before, I thought by moving he wouldn’t know where I was, so I wasn’t worried.
There was a handsome guy named Ralph who seemed sort of distant, who would come in on Saturday nights.

He was very different than most of the men who came in and flirted with me. He was the opposite and it sort of bothered me. I wondered why he didn’t seem to like me?
Then one night he came in and I walked over to him and asked what he would like to have. He said "I would like to marry you." I thought it was pretty funny that he, who was so cool towards me, was interested after all. I joked back with, "well sure I am not busy when I get off work". We started to date and became engaged several months later. He had a boat and would take my children with him to fish and swim.
Ralph would tell me odd stories about when he was a frogman in the Navy, and how he could reach under a man’s rib-cage, pull out the man’s heart, and show it to him before he died. I was not impressed. One day when he was at my apartment and we were cooking game hens, he said something that was disturbing to my daughter. I don’t remember what it was, but it upset her. His friend was there as well and we were doing handwriting analysis after dinner. My daughter made the comment: "Jeez Ralph, you write just like the Zodiac." She was right- it did look like the Zodiac’s handwriting that we saw in the newspaper.
PictureInspector Dave Toschi
It was sometime later, when his friend was telling me a story about the three of them boating at Lake Berryessa and that when they woke up one morning Ralph had a hood on his head. Now that was becoming too much for me to keep to myself, after all, Ralph had once told me how he planned at one time to kill his ex wife, but didn’t, or so he claimed.
He had also said to me that one of his fantasies was to commit the perfect murder. By now, I knew I had to get out of this relationship. Meanwhile, I called Dave Toschi and told him everything I knew about Ralph. Dave asked me to get some of Ralph’s handwriting and send it to him. I wanted to get away from him as fast as I could without upsetting him, so I told him that I had a modeling offer in southern California. He said that if I took that job, he wouldn’t be with me. As far as he knew I took the job. Dave Toschi called to let me know that Ralph had only one DUI arrest and that his picture looked similar to the description of Zodiac. Ralph knew how much money was on Zodiac’s head at that time- I thought that was interesting that he would know such a thing.

In 1971 or 1972, my friend Verna and I decided to go east over the bridge towards the Spindrift Marina where I worked, to a place just past the Spindrift, for a few games of pool.
For whatever reason, instead of going east over the bridge I drove to Verna’s house, perhaps to use the rest room. Within a couple of minutes of being there my daughter called to say that a bomb had exploded near the Spindrift Marina and that they were evacuating everyone off the island. Luck was with us, because we would have been right on top of the explosion had we not stopped at Verna’s first.
Whatever it was, it blew a hole in the road 12 feet wide and 12 feet deep. It swept the boats in the marina away from their berths, with people on top of their roofs to keep from drowning. It flooded the corn fields, and the water went all the way to Stockton. My boyfriend, who owned the Spindrift, never understood what caused that to happen. The year before, on July 4th, both of his restaurants were set on fire within a hour of each other- one was the Spindrift, the other was near Sacramento called the Captains Table.
Sometime before the flood, someone took a shot at him from the levy road. Still, I don’t think I gave any thought to my secret admirer being behind all of these strange happenings. I was now out of work because of the flood, but thank goodness I was known to be a good waitress, because  I received a call from the owner of the Sugar Barge, asking if I would work for him, so I started immediately, working there three or four nights a week.

PictureClayton is a city in Contra Costa County, California. View from Mt Diablo.
I moved from Rio Vista to Clayton and rented a home with three other girls. I believe the year was 1973. While we were looking for a place to rent we went through a real-estate agent, who showed us a place that was once rented by some members of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA).  We didn’t want to take that one, so we took one in Clayton on Claycord Street.
While living there, I worked at a place in Pleasant Hill named Rick’s Lounge. It was a huge place with live music and sat in a mall with a large parking lot. A friend I went to school with owned it.
One night I had got off work just before closing time, when I saw a man in a station wagon sitting across the parking lot, who waved at me. I waved back, thinking he was a customer who was leaving as well. He pulled out when I did and ended up behind me.
I had a feeling that he might be planning on following me, so when I got out of the parking lot and was at the stop light, I decided to make a U-turn back into the parking lot.

The man behind followed suit, confirming my suspicions that indeed he was following me. I parked my car near the front door to Rick’s and ran towards the door. The man stepped on the gas to try and run me over. He had light hair, styled in a crew-cut. I don’t remember his face, but recalled that he looked older than me. His station wagon had wooden panels, with a rack on top- a conservative looking car unlike what a young person would be driving. I didn’t connect this incident with my secret admirer either. Unless he had different wigs, he didn’t look like the man in Vallejo in 1968, who had dark brown hair.
While still living on Claycord in Clayton, the girls and I noticed a man hanging around in an orange Volkswagen. He would just sit in his car near our home. I can remember his face as being real red looking, more than just flushed. He possibly had a skin condition, like a rash.
We started to get the same sort of calls that I had received when I lived in Napa and Rio Vista, just someone breathing on the other end. Then one day there was a voice that said "I just want you to know, I know where you live."
I could hear music playing in the background, but it wasn’t anything that I recognized, such as Rock and Roll, Country or Jazz.

By then I was dating Mike, someone who was in my life up until a few years ago. We maintained a friendship for many years, until he married. But one day stood out, that I still can’t forget. We had spent the night together in Concord at his place, and in the morning while Mike was in the shower, I was still in bed waiting for my turn to shower. I heard a slight noise at the window that was about six feet from the bed. I opened my eyes and saw a large muscular hairy arm coming through the open window. I let out a scream and the man left. Mike tried to see if he could see anything out the window, but the man was out of sight. Could that be the same person who was harassing me? How could one person have so many strange things happening to them. No one I know of, has had anything even remotely close to what I had going on- even now it only happens to me and Pam Huckaby. Not so much her anymore, she is in a gated community in another state.

PictureLisa Dickinson
Around 1973, I had saved up enough money to put a down payment on a condominium in Walnut Creek, just off Ygnacio Valley Road. It was very close to Heather Farm Park, once owned by Bing Crosby, but later remembered for the abduction site of a young girl on a bike, who has never been found. That took place while I was living there and she was a school mate of my son at that time. Lisa Dickinson (9) was last seen near the Pleasant Hill station of the Bay- Area Rapid Transit on September 5th 1976.
By now, I am at Pier 29 Family Restaurant in Oakland, working for the same owner of the Spindrift restaurant, Harry Schilling Senior. Only now I am working five nights a week instead of three.
One night I was driving home from Pier 29, when I noticed someone was behind me for a long time, so thinking I am being followed again, I remembered reading that it is a good idea to drive to a police station. So when I got to Walnut Creek I drove to the police station and starting to honk the horn to get help. That worked right away, as an officer came to the car. I told him that an orange Volkswagen was following me all the way from Oakland and should be showing up in a second. The person following me must not have known Walnut Creek very well, or he would have known that is where the police station is located. They spoke to the man in the Volkswagen, who said yes he followed me because he liked me, but meant no harm. He said that he was from the Alameda Navy Base. They sent him on his way and I drove to my apartment. I always looked in my rear view mirror to make sure I wasn’t being followed and still do that to this day.

The odd phone calls were still coming- I am not sure if I connected them to all of the other calls or not. One call was a man who said that he was doing a thesis and needed to ask me questions. I forgot everything he asked, but the questions became uncomfortable and I knew whoever this man was, he wasn’t a nice person. He started asking me about my daughter who was 16 years old. I wanted to get this person caught and tried to set him up. I called the police and told them everything, but the man was never caught.
Could that man be the one who is bothering me still? I have no way of knowing for sure. If he was my stalker, was he upset at all the guys I dated. Did he think I was a lot like Darlene.

In 1975 I met someone, fell in love and married him two years later. He lied to me about his age and over time he became fourteen years younger than I. He is the one who taught me all about guns and how to shoot. We joined the American Sportsman Club and went hunting, fishing and camping whenever we had a chance. My children loved the camping part of it. That wasn't so new to me- I grew up camping with my parents and frequented Lake Berryessa to camp many times, as well as the coast of Jenner and Fort Bragg.
PictureAntioch is a city in Contra Costa County, California
From 1977 to 1982 my name was changed and I had moved from Walnut Creek, so I felt more comfortable during that period in my life. The only bad thing that took place was with one of my best friends Dana, who moved about the same time as I did, to the town of Antioch. I do interior decorating and my friend Dana wanted me to wallpaper her kitchen. We each borrowed three wallpaper books to take to her home, so we could pick out which would look the best. She was so happy about buying her first home at the age of only 24.
That was about three days before her parents found her body on the kitchen floor, on my birthday.
The night before I had received a phone call about 9.30 pm, no one spoke, so I hung up and took the phone off of the hook so we could get some sleep without anymore calls.
It was the next day that I was told by my other friend that Dana was dead. It was made to look like a suicide- she was shot with a .22 weapon, which she owned for protection. The gun was found in her living room near the front door, yet her body was in the kitchen several feet away. Her phone was found off the hook.

Dana's mother asked if we would clean up the kitchen floor where her body was found- we did. I also fixed Dana's hair for her funeral, which is when I noticed that someone had cut her hair. I was the one who she would ask to cut her hair and it was longer the last time I saw her, which was only a few day before. While I was sitting at her kitchen table looking out towards the road below, I happened to see a man looking up at us as he was driving by. He had curly dark brown hair, with a round face that reminded me of the man from Vallejo in 1968. It was almost a surprised look he had on his face when he saw us there. Could he be the one who killed our dear friend and made it look like a suicide. It was because her home was locked up, that the Antioch Police Department believed she had killed herself. The patio door had a automatic pen that would lock it if you closed it. Did the police ever ask her friends any questions about Dana- no they did not.
I believe Dana was murdered. She was very happy and had a lot to look forward to. Who plans on decorating their brand new home and shoots themselves instead.

My young husband was a bit spoiled by his mother. She gave him anything he wanted, so he didn’t have much incentive to work. I was earning enough to take care of us all. Because my credit was very good, he bought a boat without mentioning it to me. This made me responsible for all of the payments, which I was not happy about.
It was about 5 years into that marriage, when I had a feeling that he was straying. Long story short, I filed for divorce, filled his boat with his clothes and sent him home to his mother.
When I changed my name back to Betts, it wasn’t long before the odd phone calls started up again.
I started to notice someone following me again. He was clever, as he would park at different areas he knew I would pass by, and then he would pull out and follow. A few times he would wait on the side of the highway and then pull out thinking that I didn’t notice. One was a Chevrolet truck with a gun rack- it held a large rifle.
I memorized many of the license plate numbers, when one day I spotted one older green car with a plate I had seen before. This time I followed him. It was Veterans Day (11th November) in the late 1980s.
Three or four days later, I was in Lyons Restaurant drinking coffee, talking to my friend who tended bar there, when my car alarm went off. One of the waitresses knew my car and told me it was going off. Something told me it was a ploy for me to go outside, so I went to the door and used my clicker to shut the alarm off. About an hour later, I left for Alameda to do some work at one of my friend’s homes, before going to work in Oakland.
As I got to the tunnel that separated Orinda and Oakland, I heard a shot, but wasn’t sure if it was a backfire or not. Then half way into the tunnel I heard another shot- this time I knew it was gunfire, so I started to weave around to hopefully evade being struck. As I was coming out of the tunnel the last shot rang out.
Then I saw him, in an older blue Cadillac Convertible. He drove past me pretty fast, so I didn’t get the plate number that time. I knew better than to try and catch up with him as he headed towards Hayward.
When I got to my friends home in Alameda, I called to make sure that it was reported and was told that others had reported it too. A few months later I wanted to get a copy of the report and was told that because no one was hurt, it wasn’t kept.

By 1989, I knew that the man I believed to be Zodiac was stalking me and following me almost every day and night, to and from work. He was becoming more bold- he didn’t seem to care if I was on to him or not. It was as if he and RH were taking turns taunting me. One day I was on my way to work in Oakland, when I stopped at a post office box on 23rd Avenue. I had some information I was sending to the Department of Justice in Sacramento.
I didn’t notice until I parked next to the box that RH was right behind me, parking as well. He was in a faded red car, like a boxy Volkswagen, with a plate that read K0K0-  I believe I knew about the Mikado by then, because seeing the word Koko on the plate was a clever move on his part. I got out of the car, mailed the letter, and looked over at RH. I got back into my car and went to work.

As I approached my workplace, there is a place in the middle of the road, where I would wait for a break in the traffic to cross over to the parking lot to park up. When I neared the break in the middle of the road I saw a brown wallet. I didn’t pick it up because it was too dangerous to do that, but went to my manager, told her about the wallet and went with her to retrieve it.
It contained a driver’s license, with a picture of a male on it, so my manager said she would try to find that person and return the wallet. I don’t remember the name on that license or if she found the owner or not. To this day I wonder if that wallet was some sort of a plant or not, for me to get out of my car and get run over by a hit and run driver.

One Sunday afternoon, a man and two women came in and ordered drinks. The gentleman went over to the piano to play a tune. One of the women said Ron "could you please play------". For whatever reason I had the gut feeling the man was Ron Pimentel, and as it turned out I was correct. I had read about him in Robert Graysmith’s Zodiac  book.
I told him a little bit about my stalker. He was very interested and gave me his home, car and cell phone numbers. He told me to call him the next time this suspect came into my job, which by now was almost every night.
Sure enough my suspect came in, so I went into the office to call Ron. The phone behind the bar had lights that would show when the office phone was in operation, so when I made the call the suspect knew I was contacting someone. He then would leave. Ron wasn’t there in time to see the suspect.
It was weeks later that Ron called me to tell me he believed my suspect was sitting in a white Jaguar in front of his office.
Ron’s car had antennas all over it, with a license plate that showed he was a private investigator. So, whenever Ron would be at my work, my suspect would not come in until Ron would leave. Then he would be there within a few minutes. It's as if he sat in his car waiting for Ron to leave.
Ron died a year or so after that. I have no idea how.
I kept my gun with me 24 /7. One of the waitresses got off late one night and was hit in the head with something as she walked to her car. It wasn't a robbery, because she still had her purse, and she didn't see the person who hit her.
I then started to walk outside of work with my gun in my hand, looking over my shoulder. I would walk with other waitresses who were worried about their safety too. Nothing happened to any of us walking to our cars after that.

People reported to me that they saw a blond-haired man looking through my car windows, but when I would walk outside to see if I could see him, he would be gone. That could have been RH, wearing his light colored wig. One customer said he saw the man just sitting in his car reading a book and spitting out the window.
He even wrote to me once and said 'he didn't know why he was afraid to tell me who he was'. That was in the late 1980s, before I took his picture.
When he would phone me, he would say "hello, it's me."  I would say "hello me, this is me" and he would chuckle. I knew that I needed to feed his ego because I felt that would help keep me alive. I didn't want to be an object, I needed to be someone he wanted to keep talking to. I told him that he and I could have had a nice relationship, if it wasn't for his one bad habit. He liked that, because he laughed, but not loudly.
Each night at around 3.00 am, as I drove the 47 miles home, I would be followed. That helped to save my life, because before that I would fall asleep while driving. I drank coffee at work before driving home, to try to stay awake, but that didn't work 90 percent of the time. Once I knew I had a crazy stalker following me each night, that kept me alert.
He would try to force me off the road by laying back, then speed up to my bumper. He did this a few times, so one time when he sped up and was close to my bumper, I tapped my break, just enough for him to see the brake lights. He went out of control and ended up sideways on a hill next to the highway.
One other time, on a drizzly and foggy night about 2.00 am, when I was on the 880 Freeway in Oakland, a car similar to a silver Honda passed me and stopped at the entrance of the exit I had to take to get home. I had to slam on my brakes to keep from hitting him and spun around on the slippery pavement a few times, fortunately escaping injury to myself and others, yet managing to continue. I am sure that made him angry that his plan fell apart.
One of the females that I feel he ran off the road and then stabbed her to death near her car, was Theresa Brown, who was also a waitress working in Walnut Creek and who lived in Antioch. She was forced off Highway 4 in Pittsburg, California. on April 22nd 1988, where many other women were being murdered by a serial killer that has yet to be caught. One of those females who got away from the killer's long knife, lived to tell me, that the man I have the picture of, was the man who tried to kill her.
PictureElaine Davis (17)
My youngest son Bobby was dating a girl from Walnut Creek named Trish. She had heard him mention that I was being stalked by a man who could be the Zodiac killer. She said she had a Zodiac book she had read and if I wanted it she would give it to me. Of course I wanted it.
We planned to meet up at Lyon's Restaurant, where she gave me the book, I bought her lunch and drove her back to Walnut Creek.
Soon after that meeting she started to get phone calls from an older sounding man, who told her that if she didn't stop dating my son, he would kill them both. He would watch her, because he knew when she was home alone and would call to let her know. He would watch her at her job and call to tell her that he saw her there and described what she was wearing. Thank goodness she reported all of this. This was before I took his picture, so I couldn't show her what he looked like to forewarn her.. There is no doubt in my mind that he was my stalker. It was a good thing that she made a police report, as that may have saved both of their lives.
Remember, Walnut Creek was the town where Elaine Davis was kidnapped. On December 1st 1969 Elaine Davis (17) disappeared from from her home in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California, abducted in the evening time through a sliding rear window. Two and a half weeks later on December 19th 1969 her body was discovered floating off Light House Point, Santa Cruz, California, however due to investigators misinterpreting the age of the victim at the time, her identity was only realized 31 years later when officials exhumed the body in 2000.
Elaine's father worked at a Volkswagen dealership. Elaine was taken while her mother drove to pick up her father from work. She must have been being watched by her kidnapper for a while, for him to know when it would be safe to grab her.

The phone calls continued... I suspected someone was on the other end, because I could hear him breathing and sometimes play music for me. Two songs I remember were, “Every Day I get the Blues” and “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher. They were recorded on my phone recorder, as were many of my phone calls.
Cards would sometimes be put in to my mail box- one was a green card with an Irish Leprechaun on it and the name Patrick’s or Saint Patrick's flooring.
In Robert Graysmiths Zodiac book there was no mention of Darlene Ferrin’s birthday being on Saint Patrick’s day. This card reminded me of her birthday. Was my stalker giving me a clue to Darlene?  Perhaps he was- I do believe he knew her very well, and she him.
He waited until after her death to reveal his name Zodiac. Did she know that he used that name for himself, so he couldn’t use it until after Betty Lou and David? I believe that this stalker believed Darlene and I knew each other- she may have known me because I could have waited on her at the Coronado Inn. But I really don’t remember knowing her. Did she know me because I was dating Buzz Gordon, and she wanted him to date her more than the one night he told me he dated her. Your guess is as good as mine.

The next striking date was January 15th 1988. It was about 11.00 pm, when a group of people came in and put a few of the small cocktail tables together. There were about eight people in the group. At the head of one of the tables sat a older looking man with a shaved head, horn rimmed glasses, thin dark mustache, nicely dressed. Next to him on his left was an older looking woman that could have been Dorothea Puente's twin sister. She was a female serial killer from Sacramento who was caught a few years later. There was one Asian woman, who I believe was a waitress at the Box Inn in Oakland's Chinatown on Webster Street. The man she was with asked for Vodka on the rocks- I told him he had drunk too much and I could only give him coffee.
I took the rest of their drink orders and asked the man at the head of the table for his order, to which he replied "Bailey's Amaretto and coffee".
I took a few steps and turned around when I felt some tension coming from the man. I then asked him if he wanted his drink made like an Irish coffee or a shot of Baileys, a shot of Amaretto and coffee on the side. He said he would like an Irish Coffee.

At that moment, I thought how odd that this man had asked for a drink, like one I had invented up on the Delta years before.
I did notice that this man had on very shiny shoes and had on dark wool Navy like pants, similar to the description offered by Kathleen Johns. His shoes were so shiny that the candles on my table tops were reflecting off of them. During Kathleen Johns ordeal in the car, she recalled his highly polished shoes reflecting the yellow lights from the car interior. I thought that I might be going crazy, thinking that this guy could be Zodiac, because he had clothes on and shiny shoes just like I had just read about in the Zodiac book. He even had the headband Kathleen mentioned her abductor was wearing.
It was also the tension I felt. When I turned to ask him about his drink order, did he think I recognized him as my stalker.

I tried to not think he could be Zodiac, but asked an off duty cop friend of mine to look at him and to remember what he looked like, because I did believe he was the man who had been following me. My cop friend, Ted G, reassured me.

I went with my strong gut feeling anyway. The final nail in the coffin was when I went to see if anyone at those tables wanted another drink. He and a few others did. He politely asked the woman to his left if she wanted another plain coke. She didn't. While I was at my station waiting for the bartender to take my order, the older man came up behind me and touched my shoulder. I let out the loudest scream ever, but he didn't even flinch, seemingly unperturbed by the scream. We were toe to toe at that point, and he said to me in a very robotic sounding voice, as if he was reading (similar to what Nancy Slover recalled on July 5th 1969 ) "I am very sorry if I frightened you." It was the most monotonous sounding voice I had ever heard. I was so very sure at that point, I was standing in front of the Zodiac Killer, and no one could convince me otherwise.
He was a short man, approximately 180 pounds, but not fat. His teeth were very stained from chain smoking. I did see a scar like a L shaped scratch on his left cheek and a circle scar on his right cheek. He had light powder all over his head, face and hands. He didn't look at all like the man I got away from in 1968.

Meanwhile, Adrian, the cook from across the parking lot at the 400 Club, came in and sat next to my station. I told him that I would like for him to watch me when these people leave, because I was going to follow the man with the shaved head outside, to get his license plate number. I told him that I was pretty sure this was the man who had been calling and following me.
Adrian suggested that he could do it for me, although I had reservations about him getting involved.
Adrian assured me he could do it without the man knowing, and besides Adrian was very proficient in memorizing numbers. To this day I wish I hadn't accepted his assistance of help, because eight months later on my “birthday” in 1988, Adrian was stabbed, disemboweled, and left for dead in Oakland. His friends had told me about it, so I tried to find which hospital he was in, but couldn’t find him- probably because it was an attempted murder.
It was a year later in 1989 that Adrian came in to Pier 29. I gave him a hug, and asked him if the man who attacked him, was the man he followed outside for me. He said that he couldn’t talk about it.
The police officer friend of mine, Ted G, who was at Pier 29 the night I saw my 'head shaved' stalker, had a boat in the Alameda Marina. I would stay on his boat whenever there was too much fog to drive home. He was always a gentleman, but wasn't afraid of anyone.
On the night of January 12th 1990 (Teds birthday), he came in to Pier 29 with two friends, one male and a female. They left about 2.00 am closing time. He and his two friends went to his boat, which was kept in a secure locked boat dock. Next to his boat he saw a man wearing a knit watch cap and heavy coat wiping down the boat next to his. He was happy to finally meet his neighbor. He introduced himself to the man and invited him to join them for a glass of wine.
Whatever that man said to them, scared them so much, that Ted called my home about 3.00 am and left a phone message on my recorder, and told me that the man who I showed him at Pier 29 on January 1988, was crazy and evil.
I got home shortly after that and called Ted back. Ted didn’t answer, which worried me immensely, so I kept calling and still no answer. Finally I called Alameda Police Department and asked them if they could check on Ted to see if he was okay. They called me back, saying he had been asleep but was perfectly fine.

When I caught up with Ted, he told me I needed to be very careful of that man, as there was something very scary about him. He warned me to stay away from him, that he is dangerous. He never did say what the conversation was about, only that it was hard to understand the guy and that he sounded real crazy. But for sure, he was the man I pointed out as my stalker.
The following year, I sent Ted G. a birthday card, inside of which I included a photograph of one of my suspects I had taken in the August of 1990 (The one with the thick curly hair, not the shaven headed one).
He said that he didn’t receive it.
A few months later on March 17th (Darlene’s birthday), I received one of the pictures in an envelope. There was no return address, but it had been mailed in Oakland. The address was printed just like the Zodiac Killer.
I am not sure if that was the picture I had mailed to Ted, or if it was one of the pictures that I handed out to the females who were being murdered in Pittsburg, California in the late 1980s early 1990s.
Was it from the killer, letting me know that he had killed another one of the girls whom I gave a picture to? I may never know that answer.
PictureVictoria Sue Bell
It was Easter Sunday, April 3rd 1988. and I was working the day shift. A young woman sat next to my station and we were talking about our clothes and how closely we were dressed. We both had on black skirts, black high heels and silk blouses. She had on a pink jacquard material, with a shiny pink flower design on it, opened at the front. Mine was lavender, with a high neck.
I had looked for one more like hers but didn’t find one, so I asked her where she bought it. She told me it was a dress shop in Alameda- Foxy Lady or something like that.

I don’t remember what she was drinking because I didn’t serve her, the bartender Hal did. I believe the time was about 3:30 or 4.00 pm, because it wasn’t so busy that I couldn’t spend time talking to her. The bartender was concerned about the man sitting at the end of the curved bar, from where he could see us talking. I was advised to walk her to her car when she left, because Hal didn’t like the way that man was glaring at us. I didn’t recognize that man, as he didn’t look anything like the one with the shaved head. He did look like a very angry man, somewhat familiar, but I didn’t make a connection at that time with the man I had seen in Vallejo/ Napa in 1968.
I don’t remember asking the young woman what her name was- I wish that I had. When she went to leave, I walked with her, but before she got to the exit she decided to use the ladies room next to the exit. I waited a bit for her to come out, but then two more customers walked in and I had to take their order. When I went back she was gone and so was the angry looking man.
There were two homicides that I discovered in Oakland, one being a woman with no identification, wearing a black skirt, black high heels and a pink blouse. The other was up on Skyline Boulevard in Oakland Hills.
Within a few days of those murders, someone wanted me to know about them and neatly cut out the articles from a few newspapers for me to see. They were put on my cocktail tray, while I was in the kitchen area getting coffee.
On top of the neatly folded stapled articles, was a quarter with the number 9 on one side of it, and on the other side was a circle on the outer edge of the quarter and a cross that went through to the edge of that circle (like the Zodiac’s logo). It was crafted using indelible ink. No one saw the person who left that for me.
As it turned out, one of the women with the pink blouses, was named Victoria Bell. Now the strange thing about this, is that Oakland Police Department felt it was someone else that killed Victoria Bell. Seems like one heck of a coincidence to me, that one possible serial killer follows her outside and some other serial killer murders her.
Sorry, but I think that there is something very wrong with that picture. I saw Victoria Bell’s crime scene. I did not see any blood near her head, and yet the man who was convicted of killing her, shot all of his victims in the head.
William Jennings Choyce was found guilty of the 1988 murder of Victoria Bell, along with the 1997 rapes and murders of Stockton women Lawanda Beck and Gwendolyn Lee.

There had to be a good reason for the number 9 to be put on that quarter, so I thought about it and remembered that my stalker connected Darlene to me for whatever reason. Darlene had been shot with a 9 millimeter.
Then I realized that the 9th letter of the alphabet was "I",  inferring it was him.
I being Zodiac.
He wanted me to believe he was Zodiac and that he killed both of these women.
I wasn't showing any fear, whereas he needed me to know that I should be very fearful, because he was in fact the Zodiac. Anyway that is what I perceived it to be.
The angry looking man, with the thick curly hair, was still coming into my work almost every night, but Ron the private investigator could never get there in time to see him. It was the January of 1990, and I had two tickets to go to a crab feed in Walnut Creek. I wanted to go, but knew it was getting too dangerous to go alone, so I asked one of my male customers Frank if he would like to join me. He said he would. However, I knew I needed to tell him that whoever this stalker was, he could possibly shoot at us while I was driving, but he wasn’t worried about it.

I said that he would need to spend the night at my home, because I didn’t want to drive back to Oakland and then back to my home alone. He was a smoker so I asked him to please open his bedroom window while he smoked.
In the morning I decided to leave early, so that whoever was following me wouldn’t see us leave. I also phoned the police to ask if they would drive by in case the man was waiting, to act as a deterrent. That took too long, so we left.
We were going to have breakfast at Nicko’s on 29th Avenue, across the street from Pier 29. It didn’t seem like we were followed, but within 5 or 10 minutes, my secret admirer walked into Nicko’s. For him to know I was there, he had to have followed me.
He had on a rust colored sweater, the same one he had worn when he came in to my work in drag. His hair was different- it was combed with a part on the left and it was flattened down with something that took away the curls. But I knew it was him just the same.
I acted as though I didn't recognize him, so he wouldn’t know. I also didn’t mention it to Frank right then, because I knew Frank would look over at him and he would know. I waited until the man got up from the counter and walked past me towards the rest room and the public phone area, behind me. As I was telling him that, the man must have stopped behind me, because Frank’s eyes were looking above my head at him. The man then went around the corner.

He wasn’t gone long enough to use either the restroom or the phone- he just wanted a closer look at Frank I guess.
I did notice that he was pretending to be reading the yellow Zodiac paperback book. I am sure he did that as a taunt.
Frank got up to pay the bill and I was looking in my purse, thinking about carefully pulling out my gun so he could see it and then putting it in my jacket pocket.
But I was worried that if anyone else saw it, like the off duty cop sitting at the end of the counter, I would be taken away in handcuffs. Besides, I had a small can of mace in my pocket.
I could see the man was walking towards me again, knowing that I was leaving. I turned towards the door, so he stood in front of me, as if to block my leaving. He had his hand in his right hand pocket and was holding something. With his left hand he held the Zodiac book up, so as to block anyone seeing what was in his other hand.
I turned away from him and took another look in my purse, then started to step again towards the door, but again he stood in the way. This all took place in a matter of seconds. Then I guess he felt that he was drawing attention to himself and let me walk past him out the door.
I told Frank to leave quickly and to lock his door right away. I unlocked my side and got in, and just as I hit my door lock, the man had his hand on my door. I backed out of the parking place with my knees knocking. I was very scared.
I drove across the street to let Frank off at his truck and parked my car next to the Park Street bridge, went into my work and fell apart inside. I couldn’t stop crying, and I knew that would be my last day of work. This stalker was getting more and more brazen and he didn’t seem to care that all those people saw him. I called the other waitress, who would come in at 6.00 pm to replace me and I asked her if she would come in two hours early so I could leave safely. I then phoned my boyfriend and asked him to bring his brother, so his brother could drive my car to his house and my boyfriend could drive me to his home in Stockton. I am not sure if we stopped at my home, so I could get my things to stay in Stockton or not. But these were the lengths I went to, in order to be safe from this obsessed man.

Picture
We told his brother to come and pick me up in the morning, but leave my car hidden in his garage. Somehow he didn’t know I wasn’t going home. I was going to Stockton. So he went to my home looking for me- he said he knocked on the front door and then climbed the fence to knock on my bedroom window, thinking I was still sleeping. He called his brother telling him he was at my home, but I wasn’t answering. That was when he found out I was in Stockton, so he drove there.
I have no doubt that he didn’t look behind him to make sure he wasn’t being followed, because the next morning my stalker drove by the house I was hiding at.
The reason I needed my boyfriend’s brother to pick me up, I had an appointment at the San Francisco Police Department with Jim Deasy about my stalker possibly being the Zodiac. I brought with me a tall glass which my stalker drank a “Bloody Mary” out of. It was before we knew about DNA, but I knew it would have his handprints and fingerprints on it, which could prove either way if he was Zodiac or not.
Deasey told me about two men who would be coming in to talk about their suspect after I left. I gave him the note with the printing. I was told by an “expert,” that the printing on that note was too much like the Zodiac’s printing to be his.
I also gave a tape of his voice saying "Sorry I missed you (meaning the shot he fired at me), well I guess I will say goodbye, don’t worry we will get together soon." I also gave him the ruler from Heald College, that was left with the Lake Berryessa costume. I thought that everything I gave him was enough 'if checked', to prove I was correct in saying that this man was the Zodiac Killer. But because they had so many people saying they knew who Zodiac is, you get tuned out, along with all of the kooks.
I did not mention the killer's costume in my car, because it sounds too good to be true. I thought that by not mentioning it, he would at least listen to the rest of my story. I had no idea at the time of discovery, that it was a costume worn by the killer. If I had any idea what it was, I would have taken it to Napa Police Department immediately.  It was many years later that I realized what was put in our car in Napa County, thanks to the Robert Graysmith's drawing of the Lake Berryessa costume in his first Zodiac book.
As soon as I saw that was what I had put away in a box of material, I started to look for it. After searching for it and not finding it, I thought it had been thrown out by my daughter-in-law, who believed she was doing me a favor by cleaning out my garage. Either that, or a renter I had in the 1980s, who sold things at flea markets, had taken some of my belongings to sell.
Later, I received a call from my ex husband. He told me he had just moved and found some boxes of mine, that his mother had been storing for us since 1977 after we moved. He knew they were mine, because he knew I saved material for my sewing projects.
I still do that to this day.
He said that as soon as he goes through all of his boxes he will let me know. I made the mistake of telling him how important the costume in one of those boxes was to me and to the Zodiac case. I have not heard from him since that conversation.
